CUNNINGHAM GEORGE W. Age 88, passed away peacefully and on his own terms, on April 10, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. George was preceded in death by his wife and best friend of 64 years, Lois, who passed in 2015. Since then he remained in their home in the company of his canine companion, Fergus. Born the only child of Wilbur and Mary Cunningham, George grew up on the Northside, graduating from Oliver High School. After serving as a WWII Army veteran, he attended the University of Pittsburgh on the G.I. Bill, where he met his future wife. Upon graduation and marriage, George and Lois settled in the Borough of Whitehall. George loved to tell stories of his international travels during his long career working at U.S. Steel as a financial analyst. Upon retirement, he enjoyed his flower garden, a round of golf, his time to read, his pets and the occasional fine martini. Most of all he treasured and took pride in his children, daughters, Amy (Jim) Ekmann and Paula Kelly; and grandchildren, Josh (Emily) Kelly, Patrick Kelly and Katy Ekmann. Faithful Fergus will remain loved and cared for within the family. A family whose respective martini glasses will be raised in a toast to a most wonderful father, grandfather and friend. Friends will be received at the JOHN F. SLATER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 Saturday from 1-4 p.m. Funeral service will be held privately.
