RYBAR WILMA M. (LINDWAY) Age 94, of Shaler Twp., on Tuesday, October 9 2018. She was born in McKeesport, PA and lived the first two years of her life in Jacobs Creek, PA. She grew up in Farrell, PA and was Salutatorian of the 1942 class of Farrell High School. She earned a Bachelor of Music Degree from Seton Hill College and a Masters Degree in Public School Music Education from Duquesne University. She is a life member of Sigma Alpha Iota, the National Music Fraternity. She taught music and theater in the Pittsburgh Public Schools for eight years from 1947-1955. She taught in Lawrenceville (Woolslair), Allentown, and Carrick (Concord). She is a longtime parishioner of St. Sebastian Church. She sang in the choir, taught CCD classes, and was a member of the prayer group. She is survived by a son, Lawrence (Linda) Rybar, of Hampstead, MD, son, Thomas Rybar, of Shaler Twp.; daughter, Nancy (Tom) Callan, of Franklin Park; grandson, Michael (Alex) Rybar; and greatgranddaughter, Liliana, of Philadelphia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Rybar and son, Donald Rybar. The family would like to thank Sunrise of McCandless, Kindred Hospice, and Cindy for taking care of our mother. GOETTLER JAY BLAIR AGE 87, OF ...
GOETTLER JAY BLAIR Age 87, of Butler, Pennsylvania, passed away on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, peacefully in his sleep. Jay was born in Butler, Pennsylvania on April 10, 1931. He graduated from Butler High School and continued on to Saint Vincent College in Latrobe for a year. Jay was married to Virginia Ann Goettler (Glace) on February 13, 1954; they were married 64 years. Jay worked at his father's beer distributor, E.C. Goettler Distributing, before joining the military and serving 4 years with the Seabees (Navy) stationed in Trinidad and Newfoundland. After returning from the service, Jay went back to work at his family's business that was established by his grandfather, Fred H. Goettler, in 1933. He purchased the business from his parents (Eugene and Margaret) in 1972, and in 1976 he became President and CEO of Goettler Distributing, Inc. He loved the beer business and was a role model for all his employees over the decades. Thanks to his guidance, Goettler Distributing, Inc. has continued on as a successful local business for 85 years. Jay had yet another passion in life
HE WAS A SINGER. During all his time raising a family and growing a business, Jay was very involved with musical theater. Taking some time off, he was in the famous summer stock theater company, The Kenley Players, 1967 production of "Sweet Charity," starring Janice Paige...he was bitten by the musical theater bug. The years that followed were filled with his starring roles in musicals. In 1970 he won "Best New Male Performance" with the Youngstown Players. From there, the majority of Jay's leading roles were with the Musical Theatre Guild of Butler. His incredible voice was not only for the theater; Jay has sung for most churches in the area, either as cantor or wedding soloist. Jay even sang "The Star Spangled Banner" for the opening of a Pittsburgh Pirate's baseball game. His voice will live on in numerous audio and video recordings, and also in his album "At Last," which he recorded in 2004. Jay is survived by his wife, Virginia Ann Goettler; his five children, Daniel Goettler and his wife, Tracy; Kevin Goettler and his wife, Ann; Larry Goettler, Karen Young, and Timothy Goettler and his husband, Scott Gabriel; his 12 grandchildren, Katie, Brittany, Patrick, Megan, Holly, Matthew, Emily, Grant, Cullen, Spencer, Rachel and Andrew; his six great-grandchildren, Carter, Madilyn, Eliana, Evangeline, Daniel and Camden; his nieces and nephews; and the rest of his relatives and friends; Jay was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene C. Goettler and Margaret E. Goettler; as well as his brother, Dale Goettler. Visitation will be held at 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. 8 p.m. on Friday, October 12, 2018 at GEIBEL FUNERAL HOME in Butler. CARROLL NORMAN LEE Of Butler, Pennsylvania, passed away on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at the Concordia Lutheran Ministries. He was born July 24, 1926 in Ransom, Kansas to the late Hugh Belford Carroll and the late Ruth Naomi Stewart Carroll. Norman is a veteran of WWII, having served in the US Navy on the USS Coral Sea Aircraft Carrier as Main Engine Officer. He attended Kansas University, where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Business and in Engineering. Norman then worked for Westinghouse in Cheswick as a Mechanical Engineer and was also owner/operator of Applied Test Systems for many years before retiring. He is survived by one son, Robert G. Carroll and his wife, Anita of Mars, PA; two grandchildren, Alayna Carroll, and Riley Carroll; one brother, Keith Carroll and his wife, Mary of Burlington, NC; two nieces, Alison Smith, and Angela Hunnicut; and one nephew, Keith William Carroll. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Yotti Carroll, whom he married August 29, 1953 and who passed away on June 24, 2012; and one brother, Bobby Carroll. TODD LaVERNE (FLAHERTY) Age 71, passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at Hospice and Community Care, Mt. Joy, surrounded by her family. LaVerne was the daughter of the late Laverne Flaherty Peters and the late John B. Flaherty. She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, William U. Todd III. Born November 20, 1946 in Pittsburgh PA, she was a graduate of Our Lady of Mercy Academy and Mount Mercy College (Carlow University), where she played basketball and was on the debate team. Following graduation from Carlow, she was an English teacher for several years before becoming a devoted mother. In later years she was a photographer for Lifetouch Studios. LaVerne was known to be the biggest cheerleader at her children's and grandchildren's extracurricular activities and sporting events. An avid Steelers fan, she was a season ticket holder and when she was not attending games, she was hosting family to watch Steeler games at her home. She was a beloved aunt to her nieces and nephews who fondly remember holidays spent in Lancaster, and days on the beach in Ocean City, NJ. She loved nothing more than entertaining family and friends, opening her home with no hesitation for holidays and events. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her three loving children, Mary-Kathleen Hartenstein (Tom), William U. Todd IV (Jaclyn) and Pamela Konkol (Matthew); also surviving are three siblings, sisters, Mary Louise Donovan and Carole Flaherty; and brother, Jack Flaherty. HUDACEK NICHOLAS JOSEPH Born July 4, 1930. Age 88, of Bridgeville, formerly of Upper St. Clair, passed away on October 9, 2018. Nicholas was the beloved husband of Joan Varlotto Hudacek. They were married August 25, 1956 and celebrated 60 years of marriage before Joan passed in 2017. Nicholas was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Anna Hudacek; his four sisters, Margaret (Peggy) Orient, Ann Lammie, Olga Hudacek Suhy, Mary Hudacek; and one brother, Andrew Hudack. During his life, Nicholas accomplished much as a Korean War Veteran, Businessman, Devout Catholic, Sports Enthusiast, husband, father, grandfather, greatgrandfather, and uncle. Nicholas was extremely proud of his three children and their accomplishments, Nick Hudak, Rosanne Warman (Dean Labby) and Carla Stowe (Donald); he loved being "Gramps" to his grandsons, Derek Warman, Michael Hudak (Nica Thomas) and John Patrick (Jenea); Nicholas's grandson, Michael, preceded him, but not a day went by without Nicholas recalling a "Gramps" and Michael story; Nicholas was happy to retain his title of "Big Nick" to Michael's and John's mom, Nancy McMichael; he was thrilled to be "Great Grandpa Nick" to Anthony, Nicolas, Aislynn, Cecelia, Colton, Jack, and "baby" Theodore; he was one-of-a-kind "Uncle Nick" to numerous nieces and nephews. Nicholas was thankful for all the years of support and concern from his family and friends. Recently, he was very grateful for the kindness and care provided by the staff at the Mt. Lebanon Rehabilitation and Wellness Center. Nicholas had an intriguing journey throughout his life and was always known for being a hard worker and very sociable. In high school he was known as the "Munhall Kid" and was president of Senior Class "203" from Saint Thomas High School. He proudly served from 1951-54 in the United States Army. During the Korean War he became a Corporal in the Eighth Army, Units 145 and 151: Transportation Core for Helicopters. He earned a Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Medal, and Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars. In 1987, Nicholas became a member of Cuddy VFW Post 586. Following the war, Nicholas graduated from Pittsburgh Technical Institute earning his diploma in Industrial Management Engineering. He also attended Duquesne University. Nicholas was a successful Life Insurance Agent having worked twenty-two years with Metropolitan Life and thirteen years with American General. Nicholas was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan. Whether a winning or losing season, he was there cheering the Pirates, Steelers, Penguins, and University of Pittsburgh's football and basketball. He could always be heard offering "encouraging advice" to any of the coaches while watching the Pregame, the Game, and of course the Post Game. He was thrilled to be in attendance during the Pirates' 1960 World Series to see Game 7, ninth inning home run hit by Mazeroski. Nicholas was also a passionate fan of all the sports that his children, grandkids, and friends of the family played. One of his fondest memories was seeing his grandson play for Hopewell and win the PIAA Football Championship in Hersheypark Stadium in 2002. Nicholas was a daily reader of the former Pittsburgh Press and now the Post-Gazette. He never released any of the newspaper, especially the sports section, until he had completely read every article. His other free time was spent collecting antiques, watching the sport of kings, and eating great meals. Throughout the years, Nicholas especially embraced dining on many of his wife's special dishes and pitzells. While Nicholas will be greatly missed on earth, we rejoice in the fact that Joan and Nicholas are united again. Pam was born in Brownsville, PA, raised in Greenfield, and settled in the South Hills, most recently in Bethel Park. An expert professional seamstress and decorator, she attended Taylor Allderdice High School and the University of Pittsburgh, majoring in mathematics and language studies. She also was a dedicated animal rescuer. Pam is survived by her son, Jason McCloskey; and her sister, Patricia A. Hoddo. She was predeceased by her mother, Adrian Zappa; and brother, Michael Hoddo. JAWOROWSKI CECELIA "ANN" (O'BRIEN) Age 79 passed away peacefully in her sleep Thursday morning, October 11, 2018 at Beaver Meadows, Brighton Twp. Born July 5, 1939 in Brownsville, PA, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Kathryn O'Brien. Ann was a faithful member of the Saints Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church, Beaver where she proudly sang in the Resurrection Choir. She had graduated in 1960 from the St. Francis School of Nursing, and became an RN at the St. Francis Hospital for 12 years, having later worked at Aliquippa Hospital, Rochester Hospital and The Medical Center, Beaver, retiring in 1990. Ann was a member of the Beaver County Sweet Adelines, and after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995, she became a volunteer for Reach to Recovery. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Frank Gilbert Jaworowski in 2012. Surviving are two sons, Jeffrey A. (Lisa) Jaworowski, Greene Twp, Gregory (Joanna "Jody") Jaworowski, Brighton Twp.; her cherished grandchildren, Jay Jaworowski, Sloane and Elyse Santillan, Gregory, Benjamin, and Anna Catherine Jaworowski; two brothers, Thomas (Donna) O'Brien, Brownsville, Michael (Candy) O'Brien, Moon Twp.; two sisters, Peggy (Tom) Patterson, Oakmont, Mary Catherine (Tom) McKee, Greensburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Sunday, October 14, 2018 from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., in the NOLL FUNERAL HOME, INC., 333 Third St., Beaver. BENDER RUTH ELIZABETH (HUGHES) Went to be with the Lord and her beloved husband on Wednesday, October 10th, a few days shy of her 87th birthday. Ruth resided in Glenshaw, PA until moving to Concordia at Rebecca Residence over two years ago. Ruth was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan cheering on the Pirates, Penguins and Steelers. Most of all, her love for her family was evident to all. She was preceded into Heaven by her parents, Benjamin and Esther Hughes and her husband, Arthur C. Bender. She is the cherished mother of Sharon B. McAwley and her son-in-law, Jonathon S. McAwley. Ruth is the adored grandmother of Matthew, Christopher, and Erin McAwley; and the greatgrandma of Oliver Jon; she is also survived by her dearest brother, John (Jack) Hughes; and treasured nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful friends. The family would like to thank those at Rebecca Residence who took care of Ruth for several years. ROBINSON SYLVIA MILLER Age 89, of Boca Raton, Florida, passed away October 11, 2018 due to natural causes. Her beloved husband of 69 years, Donald M. Robinson, preceded her in death. Sylvia was the loving mother of Stephen (Teresa) Robinson and Carol Robinson (Jeffrey Markel); grandmother of Abby (Mike) Foster, Leslie Markel (Felix Berger) and Richard Markel; greatgrandmother to Beatrice, William and Finnley; and sister of Morton (Maxine) Miller. Born in Pittsburgh, Sylvia was a proud Taylor Allderdice graduate and attended the University of Pittsburgh. She met the love-of-her-life Donald when he crashed a wedding while on leave from the Navy. Sylvia devoted her life to family and community. Her many philanthropic interests included board positions at the Riverview Center for Jewish Seniors, Jewish Association on Aging, Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Youth Symphony and Pittsburgh Ballet Theater. Sylvia founded The American Friends of Israel War Disabled. She was also a long-time volunteer at Family House. Sylvia had a life-long interest in theater leading to multiple roles in the City Theater New Works Festival and Jewish Community Center productions. In recent years, she most enjoyed time with her family and her weekly lunches with a group of Pittsburgh friends residing in Boca Raton. GUERDAN ROBIN L. (LEWIS) Of Monroeville, age 78, died on Wednesday, October 10, 2018. For 54 years, Robin was the beloved wife of Edward "Guerdy" Guerdan who died this past April 27. Loving mother of Audrey (Joe) Petrick of Greensburg, and Tracy (Tom) Deen of Plum; proud grandmother of Josh, Zack, and Rachel Petrick, and Kennedy Deen; cherished sister of Carol Richards of NY. Robin is also survived by loving brothers-in-law, sistersin-law, nieces and nephews. Prior to her marriage to Ed, Robin was a flight attendant with TWA, which stimulated her passion for traveling. She and Ed shared many adventurous trips around the world. Robin was devoted to her family and friends and will be dearly missed. To honor Robin's wishes there will be no visitation.
