She went back to school at the University of Pittsburgh for her master's degree in social work and practiced psychotherapy at an out-patient mental health clinic. She was an avid gardener, Ellen was proud of her dirty fingernails and her pet dogs and cats. Afterwards he met his loving wife, Maryann Hirschinger, whom he was married to for 55 years. He was an amazing husband, loving father and friend to all. He never met a stranger. KOVALL ANDREW Age 89, of North Versailles, PA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 8, 2018. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, scholar, and friend. Andrew was born April 15, 1928, in Linn, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Susanna and John Kovall; and his siblings, John, Andrew, Michael, Paul, George, Pete, and Susanna. He devoted his life to public service. Andrew joined the Army in 1946 and spent much of his six years of active duty service in Asmara, Eritrea in East Africa, a place he held near to his heart until his last days, even taking a trip back in 1995. After his time in the Army, he joined the Navy Reserves, serving 22 more years to his country. Andrew worked for the state of Pennsylvania as a vocational rehabilitation counselor for 30 years in Pittsburgh and McKeesport. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW and served as an usher at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church. Andrew considered himself a renaissance man who enjoyed reading, tailoring, painting, tinkering, and especially gardening. He challenged his mind throughout his lifetime, learning new languages, taking college courses in his retirement, and doing the daily crossword in red pen. He had a great love of music that he passed on to his children and grandchildren. Never having met a stranger, Andrew loved conversing with everyone around him. He most loved spending time with his family. Andrew is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Virginia; daughter, Carolyn (Robert) Brown; son, Robert (Sandra) Kovall; granddaughter, Chelsea (Tommy); grandsons, Evan, Michael, Matthew, and Mitchell; great-granddaughter, Grace; and many nieces and nephews. TERRELL RALPH E. Age 90, of Valencia, on April 10, 2018, in UPMC Passavant Hospital. Born on July 10, 1927, in Port Arthur, TX, son of the late H. Dailey and Myra Louise Burnham Terrell. A U.S. Navy veteran, Ralph graduated from Drexel University with a Bachelor's Degree in chemistry and worked as a senior project chemist for Gulf Research in Harmarville. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bakerstown, volunteered at the Lighthouse Foundation in a variety of capacities, and along with his wife, Mary, delivered meals for Southern Butler County Meals on Wheels. Ralph served on the Mars Area School Board, was involved with Mars Area Athletic Boosters, Mars Band Boosters, and served as president of the Butler Area Vo-Tech board and Vice-Chairman of the Butler Area Vo-Tech Authority. He was a member of Fort Pitt Chapter PIAA Track and Field Officials, served as an official in Western PA and PA State Finals, and was founder and chairman of MAFEE, Mars Area Foundation for Educational Excellence, which supplied funds for special programs/projects for Mars Area Schools. Annual family vacations were spent enjoying travel throughout the United States, Canada, parts of Europe, and Chile, South America. He and his family hosted exchange students through Rich-Mar Rotary and Mars AFS (American Field Service) from Japan, Chile, Germany, and St. Lucia. Ralph and his wife, Mary were awarded Paul Harris Fellows by Rich-Mar Rotary and the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. Surviving is his daughter, Sandra L. Floyd and her husband, Edward of Valencia; a son, Jonathan Terrell and his wife, Terre' of Salida, CO; and a grandson, Nathan R. Rodda of Valencia. In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by his beloved wife, the late Mary Gill Terrell; and one brother, the late Dr. D.B. (late Joan) Terrell. DiGIROLAMO ANTHONY J. Age 95, of Lower Burrell, died Wednesday, April 11, 2018 in his home. He was born in 1922 to Josephine (Geraci) and Frank DiGirolamo, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Jack and Lawrence. Anthony graduated from Tarentum High School in 1940 and later joined the Army, serving as a Sergeant in the Signal Corp of Patton's Third Army. He witnessed firsthand the horrors of the concentration camp at Dachau, Germany. His career centered on his fruit and vegetable store located on Fourth Avenue in Tarentum and the wholesale produce business in Brackenridge, DiGirolamo Produce. He was known for making exceptionally beautiful fruit baskets, frequently receiving thank you notes from recipients. He had an artistic flair for making memorable signs advertising items on sale, and shopping at the Tarentum market was like stepping into a small shop in Italy, with bountiful displays of fruits and vegetables inside and out. Anthony was a professional musician, who played the drums with big bands such as the Glenn Norris Orchestra. He was a proud member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 630. He played at countless weddings, often returning home with a piece of wedding cake, making his wife, Ellen, something of a connoisseur. Playing drums was a talent he proudly shared with his son, Don. He was a huge sports fan, betting with his daughter, Joellen, on the outcome of each Steelers game the wager a dollar bill passed back-and-forth to the victor each weekend of the season. He enjoyed debating religion, politics and philosophy with his daughter, Susan. At the age of 92, he learned to use a Kindle. One of his first e-books was a joke book from which he learned new jokes to tell the priests at St. Margaret Mary's church in Lower Burrell each morning after mass. Anthony was a loving and devoted husband for more than 70 years to his wife, Ellen (Bello), who survives him; along with his children, JoEllen (Alan) Yeasted, Don (Susan) DiGirolamo and Susan (Tom Tonkins) DiGirolamo. He had a special fondness for each and every one of his 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the caregivers from Family Hospice, Presbyterian Senior Care and Visiting Angels. Anthony lived a life full of love, kindness and curiosity. NYE ADA MAE (PAPANU) Age 91, of McCandless, passed away on Tuesday, April 10, 2018. She was the loving wife of the late Victor M. Nye; beloved mother of Aimi Long and Victor (Ellen) Nye; she is also survived by seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Ada was very involved with the American Contract Bridge League, having achieved the rank of Silver Life Master. Friends will be received Saturday from 2-4 p.m. in the H.P.
