BONK JOSEPH J., Sr. Age 93, of Export, passed away on Friday, December 1, 2017, after a brief illness. He was born on April 15, 1924, in Franklin, New Hampshire, the son of the late Anthony and Katherine (Koziel) Bonk. Joe grew up in a Polish community where his family belonged to the Polish Home Association. He was a WWII veteran serving our country in the United States Army. He was assigned to a tank battalion (14th armored division) and initially landed in Marseilles in southern France in November of 1943. He was transferred to battalion headquarters since he could type. The typing course that he took in high school probably saved his life since the tank he was originally assigned to took a direct hit. His battalion moved into Germany and they encountered the enemy at the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he attended the University of New Hampshire on the GI Bill and graduated with an Electrical Engineering Degree. He worked for Westinghouse Electric Corporation for 39 years in both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. For decades after retirement, he enjoyed eating lunch once a month with a group of Westinghouse retirees. He was also a great handyman and could fix anything. Joe will be greatly missed by his wife of 58 years, Teresa “Terri” Hagan Bonk; his children, Joseph J. “Jay” (Cindy) Bonk, Jr. of Lewes, DE, Mary Kay (Wally Trynock) Pavis of Export, PA; his grandchildren, Kelsey Bonk, Justin (Hannah) Pavis, Alexa Bonk, and Jennifer Pavis. He is survived by many nieces and nephews, but was especially close to his nieces, Joyce Mailhouse, Jean Cappello, and Wendy Weller. In his later years, Joe was skillfully aided by Michelle Shaffer whose kind assistance and support allowed him to remain at home until his death. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Olga Buczynski, of Guilford, CT. Joe loved to travel and took his wife, children and sister, Olga, on many memorable vacations to places in the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. Above all, Joe was a wonderful husband and father who loved and cared for his family and his kindness and support will be sadly missed. Visitation will be at the HART FUNERAL HOME, INC., 3103 Lillian Ave., Murrysville, PA 15668 on Monday, December 4, 2017, from 6 -8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Export, PA. Interment will follow in Twin Valley Cemetery in Delmont, PA.
