PARRISH PETER P. October 8, 1924 August 7, 2017 - Peter Parrish, age 92, recently of Atkinson, NH and formerly of Wood-Ridge, NJ passed away at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, MA. Peter was born in the neighborhood of Hays, on the east side of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One of ten children, Peter always knew that family came first, and would always make time for family. When his country called in World War II, Peter enlisted into the United States Marine Corps, fought in several campaigns, including the Battle of Iwo Jima, where he was awarded a Purple Heart for his injury in combat. Peter was a machinist and a millwright and worked for many years at Curtiss-Wright Corporation where jet engines and the reactor vessels for the US Navy's nuclear submarines were built. Peter had a strong work ethic and after his retirement from full-time work, Peter continued to work part-time for Suburban Seat, a vehicle seat upholstery company, and later in his 80's as a crossing guard in New Jersey. Peter and his wife, Pearl, were members of the Church of the Assumption of Our Blessed Lady in Wood-Ridge, NJ. Peter enjoyed reading historical non-fiction, fishing with his sons and grandson, and traveling with his wife to see the country he loved. Well into his 80's, Peter enjoyed taking his daily walks and swimming laps three times per week at the health club. Peter also enjoyed telling humorous stories of growing up during the depression with his brothers and sisters, and how they would make the best of difficult times. Peter is survived by his wife of 65 years, Pearl; his sons, David of Little Ferry, NJ; and Dennis and Peter's daughter-in-law, Elizabeth of Atkinson, NH; his grandson, Gregory of Newton, NH; Peter's sister, Josephine Sissy of Hazelwood (Pittsburgh) PA; his nephew and nieces and great-nephews and great-nieces. CHRISTULIDES MARY G. KAPOURELOS Mary Christulides, born in Chester, PA on January 23, 1921, to George and Anastasia Kapourelos, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2017. She was the mother to Elpi Altum and the late Father George Christulides. Mary was one of nine children, four girls and five boys. She graduated from Chester High School and worked in the family restaurant during World War II. During that time, she had the honor of meeting the late Martin Luther King, Jr. and the late Archbishop Makarios, who later became the president of Cyprus. In 1953, Mary married Euripides Rip Christulides, a Cypriot, and had their two children. Mary and Rip celebrated 64 years together this summer. During their marriage, they lived in Philadelphia, Portland, Atlanta and then Pittsburgh, where they raised their children and lived for 50 years. While in Pittsburgh, Mary worked in the library of the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf for 18 years before she retired. Mary was a devout Greek Orthodox and devoted her time to the Church. She taught Sunday School for 25 years and worked the Greek food festivals at the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Pittsburgh. She is also known as "Mrs. C" to campers from her many summers at Camp Nazareth. Mary showed love abundantly and always left you with quite a story. Her constant joy and pride was being "Yiayia" to her three grandchildren, Mary, Thespina and Christopher. She will always be remembered and loved for her great kindness. She spent the last years of her life in Medford, New Jersey, with her daughter and son-in-law. She is survived by her husband, Deacon Euripides Christulides; her daughter, Elpi Altum and husband, David; her daughter-in-law, Lia Christulides; her brother, James Kapourelos; and her grandchildren, Mary Ellison and husband, John Ellison, Thespina Christulides, and Christopher Altum. MALONE DOUGLAS NEGLEY Age 61, died on July 25, 2017, of complications after a long battle with Amyloidosis, the blood disease that former Pittsburgh mayor Richard Caligiuri had. Mr. Malone was Maddog Doug Malone during his years with WYDD-FM, the free form rock and roll station, from 1973-1975 and chaired the jazz morning show 'Jazz and Things, along with Buck Brice. Mr. Malone ran an electronic music studio, MIDI MASTERS, in the mid to late 80's, that specialized in original soundtracks for such corporate clients as Westinghouse and Rockwell. Mr. Malone had the honor of tuning all the pianos for the Van Cliburn International Competition at the Inn of Mountain Gods, a resort on Mescatero Apache reservation land in Ruidoso, New Mexico, in 1984. At that time he was also a D.J. and operations manager for KOAW-AM, an early freeform classic tracks rock station in Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico. Malone's last big project was as a producer (and player) for Pittsburgh jazz guitar great Jimmy Ponder's last CD, Somebody's Child, which reached #3 on the Jazz Week airplay charts in June of 2007. Malone moved to Hawaii to pursue his love of Hawaiian slack key guitar. This was where he was diagnosed with the rare, incurable blood disease that took his life. Mr. Malone is the direct descendent of Alexander Negley who settled Highland Park (then known as Negleystown) in 1788. Mr. Negley's original homestead was situated where the Highland Park Reservoir and walkabout is now located. Mr. Malone worked hard to keep the Negley history alive and intact. A memorial party will be held at Portagallos Pepper's N'at, located at 28 Braddock Ave., Braddock, PA 15104 from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday August 20, 2017. Friends and acquaintances are all welcome, and dress is casual. An avid feline lover, Mr. Malone asks that any donations in his name be given to any local animal shelter. SHIELDS JAMES E., Jr. Age 89, of Penn Hills, on July 18, 2017. Jim's loving wife of 59 years, Florence B. Shields died May 14, 2017. He is survived by his daughter, Linda C. Andrews, sons, James E. Shields III and Bill Shields; stepson, Robert D. Niekum; grandsons, Todd J. Smith and Jared E. Smith; great-grandchildren, Sophia, Sarah, Myles, Marin; and brother, Gerald Shields. Jim served in both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army Reserves. He worked as a project engineer for steel companies in Cleveland and Pittsburgh, then later for the Internal Revenue Service. Jim's favorite hobby was meticulously carving, to scale miniature models of United States Navy Ships. Jim and his wife, Florence, were active members of Zion Lutheran Church in Penn Hills. Jim served as an usher, worked in the church's community room during and following events, and regularly visited members who were unable to participate in church activities. Following the end of the Vietnamese conflict, Zion sponsored four friendly Vietnamese sailors who were sent from San Francisco to a Pennsylvania military camp. Phat Nguyen was welcomed into the Shields' home and lived with the family for five years. DORAN WILLIAM H. Age 77, of Eighty-Four, passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2017, in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 5, 1940, in Turtle Creek to John William and Grace Doran Dowling who preceded him in death. On December 17, 1960, he married Anne Marcheck who survives. Mr. Doran was a dedicated, hard worker who was self-employed for Doran Construction for many years before his retirement. He was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan especially the Pittsburgh Steelers. In his spare time, he enjoyed deer hunting, fishing (especially fly fishing) and spending time at his camp in Sinnemahoning. Above all, he loved being with his family and cherished his time spent with them. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, William J. Doran of Everett, WA and Robert T. Doran (Vickie Bashioum) of Hickory; three daughters, Melissa J. McIntyre (David) of Canonsburg, Christine A. Hixon (Bruce) of Canonsburg and Elizabeth M. Doran-Washburn (Jon) of Holly Springs, NC; 12 grandchildren, Natalie FitzGerald (William), Emily Imblum (Scott), Michelle Doran (fiancé Cory Griffith), William R. Doran, Matthew Hixon, Brendan and Declan McIntyre, Jag, Wyatt and Drake Doran, Maxwell and Penelope Washburn; and one great- grandson, Oliver Imblum; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Sambo.
