SANTELLA VIOLA Age 93, of Ross Township, on April 17, 2017. Devoted wife of the late Herman S. for 61 years; loving mother of Stephen (Mary) Santella, Robin (Rick) Kromka, and the late Mark Anthony Santella; beloved grandmother of Stephen Michael Santella; treasured aunt of Almerinda Greco; additional nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. Viola was an avid volunteer for Meals on Wheels and was featured in the April 2017 edition of Pittsburgh Senior News for her 30+ years of service. During her life, Viola also volunteered at St. Raphael's Roman Catholic Church. She held various offices in the Women's Guild, ran weekly bingo for senior citizens, chauffered the nuns to appointments, and catered dinners/luncheons for the priests and guests. After moving to Ross Township in 1971, Viola continued her volunteer career at St. Sebastian Church, sewing at the Vincentian Home, delivering meals, baking, and working in the kitchen for Meals on Wheels. She still managed to take care of her son who had Muscular Dystrophy, learned to play bridge and to bowl. When her husband had a stroke, she expanded her volunteerism again, providing help to the program director at a weekly stroke group in Fox Chapel. They enjoyed outings, exercised, played games,and made crafts, followed by a sweet treat usually baked by Viola. MEDICH GABRIEL “BABA” Age 87, passed peacefully at home, in White Oak, on April 16, 2017. He was born November 3, 1929, 'below the tracks' in Duquesne, PA before moving to Polish Hill in West Mifflin where he raised his family. He moved to White Oak to live with his daughter and family in 2010. He was the son of the late George and Maria (Boban) Medich. He was married to the late Dorothy Gavlik Medich for 57 years when she passed in 2008. Surviving are his son, David (Teresa) from Conway, South Carolina; and his daughter, Marcie (Michael) Ward from White Oak; his grandchildren, Cassandra and Gabriel Ward, were his world and shining stars. He is survived by a sister, Diana (Jerry) Drobac of Finleyville. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, William and Alex; and a sister, Alice Cheke. At the age of 16, Gabe quit high school in 1945 to join the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the U.S.S. Washington BB-56 and became a veteran of World War II. He did eventually earn his GED high school diploma. He worked as a gandy dancer and bridge painter for Union Railroad before becoming a U.S. Letter Carrier in West Mifflin. He was known to many as the 'singing mailman'. After retiring in 1991, he worked part-time as a custodian for his church, Holy Name Parish in Duquesne. Gabe loved sports. He was an avid basketball player in high school and in the U.S. Navy where he played on his ship's team. In the 1950's, he played basketball for the Duquesne Serbian team, Duquesne Croatian team, Monessen Croatian team. With these teams, he won three National titles. In one game, he scored 38 points, his all-time high. He received numerous awards including the AAU Sun-Telegraph Dapper Dan Award for basketball and the M.A.S.A. Sportsman of the Year award. He is also a member of the McKeesport Athletic Association Hall of Fame. He also loved to coach and had such a positive impact on his players. Gabe loved everyone he met. He always wanted to make people happy and leave them laughing. For those that knew him, we know this was Gabe. Gabe said that he did all that he could to help his family and friends in this lifetime. Gabe was a member of Christ the Light of the World Parish in Duquesne where he was a member of the choir, Caring Ministry, Men's Club and was a Eucharistic Minister and an usher. He was a member of VFW Post 914 and American Legion Post 683, both in West Mifflin and NARFE for federal employees. He was a lifetime member of the Serbian National Federation and Croatian Federation. HUDACEK JOAN Age 83, of Bridgeville, formerly of Upper St. Clair, passed April 13, 2017, the same date of her departed mother, Rose Varlotto, 25 years earlier. Also preceded in death by her father, Joe Varlotto. For 60 years, Joan was the beloved wife of Nicholas Hudacek. She was a loving and devoted mother to Nick Hudak, Rosanne Warman (Dean Labby) and Carla Stowe (Donald); a caring sister to Phyllis Hwostow (late Tony); and thoughtful aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. She was an ever so loving “Grams” to Derek Warman; and to her deceased grandson, Michael (Nica Thomas), John Patrick (Jenea); and Michael's and Johnny's mother, Nancy McMichael. She was a wonderful great-grandma to Anthony, Nicolas, Aislynn, Cecelia, Colton, Jack, and Theodore. Joan was a successful business woman for many years, working first in her parents' diner, next as the secretary to the President of Gordon's Shoes, later a lifelong musician in her band - The JEDs, and finally a successful realtor. Joan was an avid Pittsburgh fan, equally cheering on the Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins. She was in attendance during the Pirates' 1960 World Series to see Game seven, ninth inning homerun hit by Mazeroski. The traditional call to her daughter in Houston, Texas to celebrate a Malkin goal will be greatly missed. Joan was accomplished in many areas, but her true passion was spending time with her family especially at one of her many famous meals. We always hoped the meal was followed with her delicious pizzels. HAYMAN CHRISTINE GURBA Age 65, of Canonsburg, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 15, 2017, in her home with her loving family by her side. She was born on December 17, 1951, in Harrisburg to J. Paul Simpson and Elizabeth Laughner Simpson who preceded her in death. She grew up on the west shore of the Susquehanna River in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. Chrissy was the youngest of seven children, five boys and two girls. She graduated from Trinity High School in Camp Hill and then went on to graduate as a registered nurse from Allegheny County Community College in Pittsburgh. She spent 25 years as a psychiatric nurse at Mayview State Hospital and retired as a supervisor. It was at Mayview State Hospital that Chrissy met her beloved husband, Wayne Hayman. On May 2, 1998, she married Wayne and they resided in Canonsburg. Chrissy and Wayne loved to travel; their extended car trips took them from coast to coast and border to border. Many of their trips took them to concerts. If The Rolling Stones were performing in the United States, a car trip was in order. Wayne got Chrissy involved in playing golf and being an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. In retirement, Chrissy was active in their social club and served as club treasurer. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Karin L. Lang (Jim) of Asburn, Virginia and Rebecca L. Gurba (fiancé Roy Cooper) of Herndon, Virginia; a devoted sister, Karen I. Stratton (Chris) of San Diego, California; brothers, Jim E. Simpson (Sarah) of Ickesburg, John W. Simpson of Canonsburg, W. Andrew Simpson (Sandy) of Pahrump, Nevada; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Mike P. Simpson (Kathy) and George P. Simpson. FANNING JOAN W. (McNAMARA) Age 86, of Mt. Lebanon, peacefully went to our Lord on Friday, April 7, 2017 with her loving family by her side. Beloved wife (55 years) of the late James B. Fanning; mother of James T. Fanning, of Atlanta, GA., John J. (Beth) Fanning, of Mt. Lebanon, Kathleen (Robert) Banks, of Wexford, and Patricia M. (Ronald) Iarussi, of Tinton Falls, NJ; loving grandmother of James (Kristen) Fanning, Lindsay (Randy) Gasior, Goddaughter Meredith (Anthony) Gayed, Joseph and John Fanning, Rebecca (Allen) Brindle, Rachael and Madalyn Banks, Katelyn Fanning; and nine great-grandchildren; loving sister of Jean Schmutz of Long Island, NY, and the late Jane Bowler of North Carolina. Joan grew-up on Long Island, NY where she attended Adelphi University as a student athlete, graduating with her early childhood teaching degree. She taught pre-school for 14 years at St. Paul's Episcopal Pre-School and took a great interest in watching her students mature over the years. Joan was very devoted to St. Bernard's Catholic Church. She was a daily communicant and an active member of the Altar Society, Women's Rosary making group, Meals-on-Wheels, supporter of The Little Sisters of the Poor (Pgh.) and over-seas Catholic Missions for over 50 years. Joan loved to travel abroad to Ireland, Israel, Egypt, Canada, and China. Joan inspired her devout Catholic faith with everyone she came in contact with, leaving an ever-lasting impression of Jesus' love. The Fanning family wants to send a special thank you to all the loving caregivers of Marion Manor who meant so much to all of us, and to Joan. McCORMLEY WILLIAM M. Age 89, of Elizabeth Twp. and formerly of Clairton, passed away on Monday, April 17, 2017, in the Center for Compassionate Care in Mt. Lebanon. Born August 5, 1927, in Clairton, he was a son of the late Joseph and Katherine (Flynn) McCormley. William retired as a warehouse manager, and was a former chemist, for Hercules in West Elizabeth, a US Air Force veteran, and was a member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish in Clairton, where he was a Eucharistic Minister there and at Jefferson Hospital. William was extremely active in Clairton, earning the city's Citizen of the Year award in 2006 and the Mon Valley Initiative Citizen of the Year in 1985. He was active with youth sports, serving as president of the Clairton Little League, coaching St. Paulinus CYO Basketball, and coached various levels of baseball in Mt. Vernon, Elizabeth, Clairton, and Dravosburg for over 30 years. In civics, William was the past president of the Wilson Civic Association, a member of the Clairton Crime Watch Committee, organized a new Crime Watch Program for Wilson, was the founder and CEO of the Clairton Recycling Center, a member of the Economic Development Corporation of Clairton, was the Clariton representative for the Steel Valley Authority. He also was a member of the AARP 612 in Wilson, an organizer of the Hercules/ Picco Retirees Association, Citizen Advisory Panel for Kopper's, Inc., Co-Chair of the Planning Commission, member of the Vacant Property Recovery Committee, and a longtime member of the Clairton Lions Club. William is survived by his wife, Marlyn (Phillips) McCormley; his daughter, Kim (Jaime) Thomas of Elizabeth; his son, Terry (Angel) McCormley of Dravosburg; his grandchildren, Patrick (Donna) Finnegan, Shawn Finnegan, Chris Thomas, Michael (Kayla) McCormley, Kevin (Lindsey) McCormley; his great- grandchildren, Allanah, Braden, Will, Victoria, and Wyatt; his brothers, Joseph McCormley of Whitehall and Dr. Donald (Thelma) McCormley of Jefferson Hills; his stepchildren, Kristen (Keith) Curran and Susan (Steve) Large, both of Elizabeth Twp.; his step-grandchildren, Samantha and Carlyn Large, Amanda Curran, and Ariane and Emily Autore; and also nieces and nephews. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her children, Suzanne (Jeff) Beebe of Cranberry Twp., Dorrie (Jim) Moreland of Ross Twp., Barbara (Ray) McDonald of Cranberry Twp., Michael (Annette) Boyer of Greensburg, George Boyer of Cranberry Twp. and Bill (Cathy) Boyer of Sarver; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. VOLK BETTY LEE Age 88, of Brentwood, passed on April 14, 2017. Born August 8, 1928, the daughter of the late Ralph and Gladys Winterburn. Beloved wife to the late Leonard Volk; caring mother to Leonard, Robert and David. Survived by brothers, Bill and Ralph; and sister Pat. Betty was devoted to her church and most of all family. She treated everyone as one of her own children and had a contagious smile that would light up a room. She will be truly missed. WEBER IRENE E. On Tuesday, April 18, 2017. Wife of the late Fredolin Weber; beloved mother of Eileen (the late Bob) Bush, Fred Weber, and Michael (Lisa) Weber; sister of George (Joan) Drost; also survived by six grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren. Irene was active in volunteer work for senior citizens and received the 2011 Art Rooney Senior Citizens Award for that year in Pittsburgh. ROUSE LEE DONALD On April 16, 2017, age 81, of McCandless. Lee is survived by his devoted wife, Karen; his children, Jason (Sue) Rouse and Kirsten (Steve) Rouse Durkee; and his grandchildren, Connor and Owen Rouse and Andrew, Alise, and Matthew Durkee. On Karen's side, Lee leaves behind Schelly (Bob) Ham Los, James (Sharon) Ham, Scott (Alisa) Ham, and Chris (Michelle) Ham; as well as his grandchildren, Kirsten, Morgan, Brittan, Caitlin, Connor, Madissan, Amanda, and Brooke Ham, and Alex, Gavin, and Parker Los. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Fenrich Rouse and his parents, Marie Colbert Lyons and Allen L. Rouse. Friends and family will be received Friday from 4-7 p.m. at SPERLING FUNERAL HOME, 700 Blazier Dr., McCandless Twp. A funeral service will be held Saturday in St. Paul Lutheran Church, North Park at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations are made in his name to the Good Samaritan Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
