REPA GREGORY (HRYHORIJ) Age 92, on Saturday, March 4, 2017. He died peacefully with family present in Salem, VA. He was the son of Cornelius (Kornij) and Evdokia Repa; father of Rev. Steve, a Ukrainian Orthodox priest, and George (with his wife Donna); grandfather “dido” to Michael and Joseph; brother to Katherine and Paulina; and uncle to all their children and grandchildren. Gregory was born in 1925 in the village of Stare' outside of Kijiv, Ukraine, during the time of Soviet aggression against the peasantry (where five million people perished). He survived the Soviet imposed famine of 1932-33, where 7-8 million perished, including his grandparents, brother and sister. Even though he was considered an enemy of the Soviet state, he successfully entered the Gymnasium at Monastir' to study history, but was then expelled for refusing to sign a declaration of atheism, along with two other classmates. This saved his life because all the other students were sent to the approaching German front. The Repa family retreated with thousands of others to escape the Soviet man-made horrors and were forcibly taken to Germany to work in slave labor camps. After the war, he survived Soviet repatriation because his family was located in the Polish zone of Germany. After surviving many Allied bombings during WWII, he moved to Manchester, England, where he married his wife, the late Josephine (Evdokia), and then immigrated to Chicago in 1951. In Chicago, he was active in the St. Vladimir, St. Sophia, and Holy Trinity parishes, and served as a board member. He worked at Chicago Rawhide (later CR Industries) until he retired and moved to Carnegie, PA. He was always grateful to America for the freedom, dignity, and opportunity it gave him. He loved stamp collecting and tinkering. Friends will be received from 1-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. with a Parastas at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at VLADIMIR S. CORBA FUNERAL HOME, 300 E. Main St., Carnegie.
