DACKO CAROL Died Sunday, January 8, 2017, after a long illness. She was a well known and highly respected nurse in the Pittsburgh area. She worked more than 50 years caring for patients with kidney disease and was beloved by her patients. Her focus was always on bettering the lives of those with kidney disease. She began her nursing career at Allegheny General Hospital and was recruited to Presbyterian University Hospital in the early 1980's by Dr. Jules Puschett, the chief of the renal division, to head up the rapidly growing home program. This program became renowned throughout the world for excellence in home dialysis, particularly peritoneal dialysis. The complication rates, particularly infections, were very low, and the program had a high rate of successful kidney transplantation. She was the nurse manager for many years of the largest home program in southwestern Pennsylvania, and loved her work and her patients so much she never wanted to retire, and continued as the nurse manager up until her death. She taught many nurses about peritoneal dialysis as well as over 200 fellows who came through the home program during their fellowship in the renal division. She was one of the organizers of the Renal Round Table, held yearly at Somerset, for home dialysis nurses. Her leadership style was gentle yet firm and was always focused on the well being of the patients with kidney disease. Her colleagues at the Dialysis Clinic, Inc. in Oakland, where she was located, are saddened by her death but celebrate her life and have many positive memories. She lived in Monessen but traveled back and forth to Oakland in Pittsburgh daily for her work which was her passion.
