CARL MARGARET M. (JORDAN) “MARGE” Of Turtle Creek, age 86, on Saturday, January 23, 2016. Beloved wife of the late John W. Carl, Sr. for 33 years; loving mother of Jack (Grace Kvorjak) Carl of Penn Hills, Terri (late Paul) Ploskina of McKeesport and the late Regis (surviving spouse, Natalie); dear grandmother of John (Aleta) Ploskina and Johnathan Carl; proud great-grandmother of Saul Ploskina; sister of Thomas (Nancy) Jordan of Turtle Creek. Preceded in death by her brothers, Edward, Francis and Regis Jordan; and her sister, Dolores Hamilton. Marge was an employee in the cafeteria of the Westinghouse plant in East Pittsburgh. At the time of the plant closure, she enrolled in CCAC, Boyce campus, and attained her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She then was employed by the Visiting Nurses Association for years until retirement. Marge also served as a Judge of Elections in Turtle Creek for over 20 years. SHAW LOUIS A. Age 69, of White Oak, died peacefully surrounded by his family, on Sunday, January 24, 2016. He was born in McKeesport on September 23, 1946, and was the son of the late Henry and Julia (Zak) Szalkiewicz. Lou was a retired letter carrier in White Oak for the United States Postal Service, McKeesport branch. He proudly served his country in Vietnam as a member of the United States Air Force. He served his community as an active lifetime member of the Rainbow Volunteer Fire Department as well as his parish, Corpus Christi Church. He will be fondly remembered for his humor, selflessness and compassion. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Eleanor (Leskanic) Shaw; daughters, Lori (Scott) Fitzgerald of Squirrel Hill and Jill (Christopher) Shipley of Ohio Twp. Lou was the proud and loving “Pap Pap” to grandsons, Drew Fitzgerald and Patrick and Michael Shipley. He is also survived by brothers, Joseph (Nicki) Shaw and Lenny Szalkiewicz; and sisters-in-law, Marianna Merten, Rita Miller, Ethel Stetz and Micky (Edwin) Janzef. FERRACO NATHANIEL M. "NATE" Age 18, of Penn Hills, passed away accidently on Sunday, January 24, 2016. Loving Son of Gregory M. and Kolleen M. (Droschak) Ferraco; grandson of Angelo Ferraco, Jr., Katherine A. (Graziano) Droschak, and the late Sadie "Sally" (Rinaldi) Ferraco and Donald M. Droschak; dear brother of Michael G. Ferraco and Nicole S. Ferraco; he is also survived by a large loving family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Nate was a member of St. Gerard Majella Catholic Church, a 2015 graduate of Penn Hills High School where he was the valedictorian and scholar athlete that participated in soccer, volleyball, and football. He currently was a freshman at Geneva College where he played NCAA soccer. He enjoyed golf, snowboarding, and fishing and will be remembered as having an outgoing personality that had a strong impact on others' lives. WINDSTEIN RAYMOND H. Loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed peacefully, on January 22, 2016, at home. Age 85, he was proud to be a former Marine and manager of numerous Giant Eagle stores throughout the Greater Pittsburgh area and a 15 year employee of the Pittsburgh Convention Center. He was a quiet, peaceful, gentle man. Ray was an avid and expert gardener who loved fishing on the Outer Banks and being surrounded by his children and grandchildren while relaxing with a cold beer. Beloved husband of Alice (Almasy); father of Raymond H., Jr. (Donna) of Lineboro, Maryland, Deb (John) Knorr of Pittsburgh and Steve (Shelley) Windstein of Pittsburgh. Born on December 12, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Lucille and George Federoff. Loving wife of the late Richard Golias for 65 years; beloved mother of Pamela Golias of Mount Lebanon, Jeffrey (Lorena) Golias of Venetia and Ron (Robin) Golias of Venetia; grandmother of Alexis, Jacob, Kaitlin, Mitchell and Jared. Varvara had a passion for painting, reading and going to the theater. She was an excellent cook and loved all animals. Varvara was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and worked as a bacteriologist at the Presbyterian University Hospital before starting a family. HURLEY GARRETT FRANK Age 71, passed away on January 21, 2016, at his home on the South Side. Garrett was the proud father of Michael Lambert Hurley (Sarah Marie Conklin) of Meadville, PA, and Ian Patrick Hurley of Boston, MA; doting grandfather of Liam Robert and Owen Bradley Hurley; and lifelong friend of his former wife of 32 years, Doreen Sayers Hurley. He was born in Belmont, MA, the son of the late Robert Lambert Hurley and Gabrielle LaBonté Hurley. Garrett graduated from Manhattan College in New York City in 1967 with a bachelor's degree in finance and economics and began his military service aboard the U.S. Navy's experimental hydrofoil ship, PCH-1 Highpoint. Garrett's business career began as a financial analyst with Shell Oil in Houston, and continued with positions with Amerada Hess, W.R. Grace and Company and U.S. Steel. Garrett completed the corporation's Advanced Management Program in 1985. At his retirement in 2007 he was President of USS Real Estate. One of his proudest accomplishments was helping to lead one of U.S. Steel's largest philanthropic gifts in company history, the Red Mountain Park in Birmingham, Alabama, in collaboration with the Freshwater Land Trust. Prior to retirement he was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church in Bethel Park, PA serving as chair of the finance committee and on the building committee, as well as being involved in many outreach ministries. He also served as treasurer of the Wesley Institute. In his retirement years, he enjoyed reading, painting, traveling, and his many friends at Fat Head's Saloon on the South Side, where he was designated a “Founding Father” of Beer Camp. Garrett is also survived by his brother, Ian Robert Hurley of New York City and nieces, Kate Hurley, Anna Hurley Ceraso, and Wendy Rehnberg, nephew, Matthew Verey Sayers, Kenneth William and Rose Sayers, Sue Hurley, and many dear friends. VEVERKA PAUL A. Age 75, of Dandridge, TN, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2016, following a brief illness. He was born May 31, 1940, in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of the late Anthony and Pauline Veverka, where he was raised and graduated from North Catholic High School. Paul went on to serve as a veteran of the U.S. Army and later was the owner of the Love Ford Dealership in Burgettstown, PA. He then moved to West Palm Beach, FL, where he worked several years as the service manager for Dollar Rent-a-Car. Upon his retirement, he and his wife moved and spent the last 14 years in Dandridge, TN, where they were members of the Seahorn's Chapel United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Hemmerlin; and is survived by his wife, Jeanne (Miller) Veverka of Dandridge, TN; children, Christine (George) Tucker of San Francisco, CA, Jill (Chris) Baker of Fredericksburg, MD and Anthony (Stephanie) Veverka of Concord, NC; stepson, Michael Miller of Stuart, FL; six grandchildren; sister, Geraldine Gabrielson of Pittsburgh, PA.
