ELLIOTT HARRIETT (DEUEL) Of Palmyra, PA passed on at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown on January 18, 2019 at the age of 102. Born in Tulsa, OK, she was the ?rst born of Archie W. and Irene Kingsland Deuel.   She lived in Palmyra, PA for 24 years after the death of her husband of 46 years, Samuel J. Elliott in 1990. She lived a rich and loving life that everyone she knew commented on and learned from. She was a prime symbol of Tom Brokaw's metaphor, “The Greatest Generation.” Harriett lived in Sistersville, WV and graduated salutatorian from Sistersville High School in 1933. She was the editor of the high school yearbook in 1932. She attended University for one year before the depression required her to quit. In 1936 her stellar math abilities landed her a job as a loan of?cer in Pittsburgh at the Colonial National Bank. She worked for over seven years at the bank, becoming a valuable employee after all the men enlisted during WWII. While working she attended banking courses at the University of Pittsburgh in the evenings and earned a certi?cate in banking from Rutgers University. She loved attending the Pitt football games on a $6 season ticket. She met her future husband Sam in 1938 on a blind date because she was told he “knew how to dance.” They got married during the war in San Diego in 1943. Later Sam was assigned to the Paci?c Theater and shortly thereafter Harriett returned to WV, pregnant with her ?rst son David. After the war, Harriett and Sam settled in Pittsburgh where they started the Elliott Plumbing and Heating Company. She served for decades as of?ce manager and accountant for this successful and busy company in a time when many new houses were being built. Over the years Harriett raised three children, was very active in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, PTA and church activities. She was President of the Church Women's Guild and the Mt. Lebanon chapter of the AARP. She served dinners for 30 years to the youth group at the Sunset Hills United Presbyterian Church and constantly was organizing programs to serve the communities in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. After moving to the Rockledge Community in Palmyra, Harriett attended the Hershey Free Church. Harriett came from a close family and was predeceased by her younger sister, Virginia Mendenhall; and her brothers, Milton Deuel and Arch Deuel; as well as a grandson, Chad Kuhn. She is survived by her three children, son, David Elliott and his wife, Mary Jane currently serving in Hanoi Vietnam; daughter, Lynn Kuhn and her husband, Bob Kuhn of Palmyra, PA and daughter Jane Iskat and her husband, John Iskat from Palatka, FL. She nurtured eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren (and counting). Harriett taught us all the meaning of Faith, the lifestyle of Hope, and the experience of Love. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at Hershey Free Church, Hummelstown, PA. A Private interment was held in the Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Pittsburgh. LECKENBY MAUREEN SIMON Age 89, died peacefully at home after a long illness on Sunday, March 17, 2019, St. Patrick's Day. Born to Maurice and Cecelia Kennedy Simon on December 15, 1929, Maureen grew up in Carrick, graduated from Duquesne University and received her Masters Degree in Remedial Reading from the University of Pittsburgh. After a long career with Pittsburgh Public Schools, Maureen retired in 1996. She was loved by all who knew her. An avid reader and lifetime Pirates fan, Maureen was known for her genuine kindness, generosity, love of Ireland and all things Irish; especially Irish sayings, of which she had many! She also was known to have rarely uttered a derogatory word while always trying to ?nd some good in everyone. Maureen was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in 1983 and beloved son, Gary, in 2003. Surviving are four sons, Dorn (Cindy), Keith (Shari), Kim (Julie) and Kevin; seven devoted grandchildren who loved her dearly, Kate, Bill, Annie, Timothy, Keith, Lauren, Joseph; and one great- granddaughter, Caroline. Maureen is also survived by her sister and best friend, June   Bianco, with whom she traveled the world and was rarely seen without; and her loving “little brother”, as she always called him, D. Russell was a retired employee of Siemens, Pittsburgh, and a veteran of the Navy and Marines having served during the Vietnam con?ict. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Irwin, and the Norwin Elks. He enjoyed classic cars and loved to golf. He is survived by his wife of nearly ?fty years, Linda G. ZURKU JOSEPH W. Age 87, of Whitehall, surrounded by his family, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 17, 2019, at ManorCare Health Services in Whitehall. Beloved husband of 62 years to Eileen D. (Thompson) Zurku; loving father of Claudia Ann (Walter) Mikulski, John Eric Zurku, Kathleen Jane (Robert) Totterdale, Lydia Ann (Jeffry) Weber, Theresa Marie Zurku and Laura Lee (Raymond) Shore; cherished grandfather of Walter (Christine), Brandon, Amanda and Mack Mikulski, Nicholas Zurku, Dustin and Hannah Shore; great- grandfather of four and great- great-grandfather of two; son of the late Joseph and Anna (Kohut) Szczurku; brother of Mary Jane (the late Karlin "Butch") Ryan; uncle of Nadia and Olivia. Joseph was born on June 24, 1931 in Beaver Falls, PA. He graduated from Beaver Falls High School in 1949 and graduated with High Honors in accounting from Geneva College in 1953. Upon graduation, he was employed by the public accounting ?rm of Haskins and Sells until 1954 after which he became an auditor for the Department of Defense Army Audit Agency until 1956. Upon completing his military service, Joseph began a successful forty-year career with U.S. Steel Corporation. At U.S. Steel, he held various management positions and was instrumental in the development and creation of the precursor to many U.S. Steel human resource systems, which was used at corporate of?ces and mill operations. After retiring from U.S. Steel, Joseph worked as a consultant for the U.S. Steel Corporation and American Iron & Steel Institute and then provided tax and accounting services to Spagnol Accounting until 2011. Joseph was a long-term parishioner of St Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin and was an instrumental member of the Christian Family Movement (CFM). His life purpose was to love and serve God. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
