MEREDITH EDWARD E . Born August 4, 1930 in Warren, Ohio, passed away January 18, 2019 in Pittsburgh, PA. “Big Ed” was a loving husband, father, veteran, and mentor to countless young adults, and a highly respected electronics engineer, salesman, photographer, and a life-long learner. With a legendary sense of humor, the inability to remember the original words to any songs, and the gentle compassion to let you learn from mistakes without judgement, Big Ed was easy to meet, to know, and to be around. Ed was predeceased by his daughter, Evelyn; and survived by his wife, Donna “Jean” (Fitch) Meredith; his children, Dr. Elaine Malec, Edward, Jr. (wife, Stacey), Eric (wife, Sara), and Tencia; 12 grandchildren; 17 great- grandchildren; a sister, Lenore (husband, James) Callihan; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a veteran of the Korean Con?ict. Big Ed was a recognized expert in electronics, radio, and television repair, and established Meredith Electronics in 1960 out of his garage in Warren. He moved his family to Pittsburgh in 1974 to continue what would be a 25-year career with Motorola, in which he became a pioneer in the area of data radio transmission, referred to today as text messaging. After retirement, he continued Meredith Electronics with Ed, Jr., became a real estate agent, and a highly sought photographer for Coldwell Banker. In the 1960s, Ed and Jean led a series of mission trips with high school students for Christ Episcopal Church in Warren, Ohio to remote locations including Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Puerto Rico to rebuild churches and spread the love of God. In one mission to Guatemala, Ed and Jean sponsored a young, deaf child and brought her back to the States for treatment. They later adopted the child, Tencia, and raised her as their own. Big Ed's generosity, expertise, and humor will be forever missed. Funeral arrangements by BEINHAUER'S. Family and friends welcome to celebrate the life of Big Ed at 2630 W. Liberty Ave., Dormont, (412) 531-4000, on Wednesday, 3 p.m. until time of service at 4:30 p.m. Please add or view tributes at www.beinhauer.com. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
