MENDELSON GILBERT A. AGE 70, O...
MENDELSON GILBERT A. Age 70, of Scarborough, Maine, died on November 1, 2016, after a long, courageous battle with lymphoma. Born in Martin's Ferry, Ohio, to Naomi and Max Mendelson, his early childhood was interrupted by Max's untimely death from cancer. Soon thereafter, Naomi, Gib and his older brother Gordon moved to Pittsburgh, where he lived until 2002. Gib, as he liked to be called, met his wife, Sherry, in high school and they married while he was in law school. They had one child, a daughter, Meredith, born in 1978. Gib practiced law in a small firm before starting an oil and gas business. He later owned and operated several businesses, retiring when he was diagnosed with lymphoma. Gib was a strong advocate for his own medical care throughout his illness, focusing on "buying time," which he did ably in the face of many difficult years of treatment. In 2002, he and Sherry moved to Maine to enjoy a quieter lifestyle near the ocean. He loved the beach and daily walks with their Old English Sheepdogs at Two Lights State Park, where he liked to stop and enjoy the view from what he called "the best bench in America." Family and friends were of the greatest importance to Gib. He was outgoing with a wonderful, dry humor that he maintained until his final days. He and Sherry traveled extensively throughout their marriage, often with friends. Gib enjoyed playing golf, not because he was especially good at it but because he cherished time spent talking and laughing on the course and over a scotch afterward. He was known for his generosity, elegant way of speaking, and infectious smile that lit up a room. Gib was predeceased by his parents and brother. He is survived by his wife, Sherry; his daughter, Meredith and son-in-law, Nick Battista; his sister-in-law, Marcia; nephews, Michael and Steven and their families; "outlaws," Lee Anne and Jeff Snook; sister-in-law, Rachel Wynn and her daughter, Lindsay; cousins, Marvin Droz and Alan Leven and their families; along with many other cousins and friends. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at the Twentieth Century Club, 4201 Bigelow Blvd., in Pittsburgh. Visiting hours will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and the memorial service will begin at noon. The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to charities benefiting the homeless.
