BUCHANAN PATRICIA MARY (WARD) ...
BUCHANAN PATRICIA MARY (WARD) On Tuesday, February 7, 2017, Patricia Mary (Ward) Buchanan left this earth for her heavenly reward, due to the effects of Parkinson's Disease. She was born on August 16, 1929, the precious daughter of the late John Andrew Ward and Mildred Lanigan Ward. She was the beloved and devoted mother of Patricia Buchanan Dunkis (Joe Werlinich), the late James John Buchanan, and Donna Jean Buchanan who died in infancy; much loved older sister of the late Marcia Meade Barnhart (the late Carl), Joseph Meade (Lois), and Susan Ward Nash (the late Mike); loving cousin of William F. Woods (Leona) and David Geisler (Karen). She is also survived by a wonderful extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins from the Buchanan, Ward, Woods, Geisler, Naughton, Barnhart, Meade, Lynch and Daley families, as well as the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the Werlinich Family. Pat was the best friend and treasured confidante for more than 60 years of the late Nancy Mattarochia, and the dear companion of the late Louis Stuczynski. Pat grew up on the North Side of Pittsburgh, attending St. Andrews School and St. Mary's High School. Her mother passed away when Pat was eight years old. She was raised during the Great Depression by her maternal grandmother, the late Agnes Lanigan, and two maternal aunts, the late Hannah Wallace and the late Frances Geisler. Pat lived most of her adult life in the Marshall Avenue-Brighton Heights area, later building a lovely home in Marshall Township. She also resided in two locations in Gibsonia that are part of the St. Barnabas HHealth System. The family is most grateful to the dedicated and compassionate caregivers at The Arbors at Gibsonia, especially Shirley Maxwell, who made her 22 months ones of true contentment. Words will never be adequate to thank them. Pat was the best mom anyone could wish to have and a skilled cook, baker and housekeeper. She loved playing cards and bowling, and was an avid reader, even learning to use a Kindle eReader as an octogenarian. She particularly liked to read mysteries and had collected the complete works of Agatha Christie. Pat worked as a claims adjuster for United Parcel Service for 29 years and was proud both of her work in the company and the company's service to the community. She exercised lifelong, and was especially grateful to Pat Pacey for her leadership in the Bellevue exercise group that worked out at Bellevue Presbyterian Church, and to the camaraderie of the Bellevue group of exercise friends. Pat was a generous contributor to a variety of charities, in particular those involving children's and veteran's causes. A devoted fan of Frank Sinatra, Pat had collected dozens of DVDs, videos, vinyl recordings and memorabilia of Old Blue Eyes, including a news photo of herself as a bobby soxer waiting in line at the Stanley Theatre in Pittsburgh on December 11, 1943 to see Frank in person for the first time. Pat also loved performances by Johnny Angel and the Halos, a local band featuring Jack Hunt, a childhood friend of her son Jim, and a cousin, Gary Daley. In her last years, she always beamed when Jack or Gary recognized her in the audience and gave a shout out from the stage. She was also a gifted pianist, having learned to play by ear, until her piano teacher, one of the Sisters of Mercy assigned to St. Andrews School, figured out what was going on and made Pat learn to read music. Sadly, in her final years, several health circumstances conspired causing her to be unable to play. Still, she enjoyed listening to music at every opportunity, singing along because she knew the words to hundreds of songs by heart. Family will receive friends on Sunday, February 12, 2017, from 1-5 and 7-9 p.m. at SCHELLHAAS & SONS FUNERAL HOME, INC., 1600 Stone Mansion Dr., Sewickley, PA 15143. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Richard Parish, 3841 Dickey Rd., Gibsonia, PA 15044 on Monday at 10 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-9929, a charity that Pat supported because the children at St. Jude touched her heart in a very special way. WILSON PHYLLIS J. PHYLLIS J. W...
WILSON PHYLLIS J. Phyllis J. Wilson peacefully transitioned from labor to reward on Sunday, January 29, 2017. She was 76 years young. Phyllis, the daughter of Pastor John Henry and Lillian Ruth Carter, was the youngest of three children. Her sister, Shirley Ruth King, passed away in January of 2017 and John Henry Jack Carter passed away in February of 1989. A graduate of West Allegheny High School, Phyllis (affectionately known to her classmates as Carts) showed prowess in academics, athletics (specifically basketball) and the arts music. Carts was known for her Pearl Mesta nature, a contagious laugh and a zest for life and fun. Making a clear decision early in her life, Phyllis took business classes and went to work for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Her business acumen shining through, she rose through the ranks and became an Unemployment Compensation Claims Examiner with the State. Known as the 'Rainbow Examiner' for her colorful adjudications, Phyllis' thorough research, detailed reviews and subsequent rulings were recognized, resulting in several of her adjudications being published in Constitutional Law books used in colleges and universities in the 80s and 90s. She ultimately retired from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with the Title of ESPR and more than 35 years of service. Concurrently and following in the musical footsteps of her family, Phyllis started playing more formally and sharing her musical talents at an early age. She played for various churches, choirs and singing aggregations (including one that she formed) to include but not limited tto Trinity AME Zion Church, Noblestown United Presbyterian Church and both Noblestown and Federal United Methodist Churches along with serving as Chapel Musician at John J. Kane Senior Care facility to name but a few. Through her music and service, it became clear very quickly that a love for the Lord and for people were quintessential elements of her character. Phyllis was always The Caregiver to those in need; taking care of her mother and others no matter the distance and without a second consideration. She had an innate ability for compassionate caregiving. Phyllis could place herself in the situations of others with great ease, see their need and then use her gifts and talents to help in any way possible. The spiritual gift of helps was clearly a part of her DNA and she unwittingly accepted that calling. It became a ministry. Carts had many facets to her life. Moving through them, she became many things to many people. A tenacious woman with strong opinions, not every day was rosy. She experienced highs and lows, ups and down, positives and negatives. As with most of us in life, Phyllis often faced the choice of taking either the direct or indirect path to the next level. Though the circuitous path may have been more costly, the reward at the end of her journey was, Well Done, Thou Good and Faithful Servant! Phyllis found peace, comfort, joy and reconciliation as her transition approached, despite battling multiple diseases and struggles, heartbreak in the loss of her remaining sibling, Shirley, a mere two weeks before her own, and an unfulfilled desire to see Niagara Falls one last time. Grace erased years of negativity allowing clarity and forgiveness to emerge and love and humility to emanate from her very being. Despite all she encountered, the victory of God's Grace spoke and continues to speak volumes. Even in her final days, the doctors and nurses continually made significant note of her humility, sweetness, kindness, and quiet strength. Clearly, It is Well! Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Valerie and host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hillman Cancer Research Center or the American Diabetes Association. Those who wish to send flowers, they may be sent to the Federal UM Church on the day of service. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Federal United Methodist Church, 811 Dutch Hill Road, Oakdale, PA 15071. Inurnment will be private. All arrangements are entrusted to THOMAS-LITTLE FUNERAL SERVICE, INC., 500 Noblestown Road, Oakdale (724-693-2800). Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb

ROBINSON JOHN N., M.D. ON TUES...
ROBINSON JOHN N., M.D. On Tuesday, January 31, 2017, Dr. John N. Robinson passed away peacefully after a battle with cancer. John was fiercely independent in all aspects of his life and business. He was born October 19, 1932 in Washington, DC. A 1950 graduate of Coolidge High School in Washington, DC. He served in the USMC between 1951 and 1954. He fought in the infantry on the main line of resistance during the Korean Conflict. He was wounded in action, suffering bullet and shrapnel wounds to his abdomen. Although he rarely spoke of that experience, it shaped his life course after returning from the war and discharged with the rank of Sergeant. He attended the University of Maryland on the GI Bill, graduating with a degree in industrial management in 1957. That same year he entered the US Steel management training program in Pittsburgh. At that point, he made the defining choice of his life, as he left that program to follow his heart and attend Medical School. He then embarked on a decade long journey of medical education. He graduated from George Washington Medical School in 1963. From 1963-1964, he completed his surgical internship at the Boston City Hospital via Harvard Surgical Service. This was followed by his Residency in New York- Presbyterian / Columbia University Medical Center between 1964 and 1969. His final year there, he was Chief Resident and Instructor in Surgery. Then came a year as fellow and associate professor of Surgery at New York University where he specialized in vascular surgery at the Wickersham Memorial Hospital, New York. From there he moved to Houston, TX for his final stint of medical education. He spent a year training with Dr. Michael E. DeBakey and then a second year with Dr. Denton Cooley. Dr. Cooley and DeBakey were the pioneers of open heart surgery. In 1973, Dr. Robinson moved to Pittsburgh, PA where he entered private practice. Above all else, Dr. Robinson loved the operating room. That was exactly where he seemed happiest. He excelled in high stress situations. A notorious lead foot driver, he was on a first-name basis with many of the police officers around Pittsburgh. It didn't matter if he was driving the family station wagon, or his black Porsche Turbo, he was usually driving flat out; heading to an ICU or operating room at one of the many hospitals where he attended his surgical patients. In fact, that's the best way to describe how he lived his life. Flat out. His patients and his craft came first in his life. He rarely took time off or vacations. He was driven to be the best surgeon he could possibly be and he felt any extended lay off would compromise his skills. In lieu of vacations, he enjoyed quite a menagerie of animals in the family home. He loved tropical fish, exotic birds and the three Russian Wolfhounds which resided with the family. His work was his avocation. After retiring from surgery, he still felt he had more to give as a physician. He spent the last eight years working for the Pennsylvania Prison hospital system managing the health of countless inmates. He felt that regardless of what brought the inmates to incarceration, they deserved the best medical care he could offer. Brilliant. Complicated. Driven. These adjectives described the man. He had a strict code of conduct. Friends were dear to him. He vigorously fought injustice or unfairness where he saw it. He was notorious for supporting persons or projects that others saw as "lost causes". He defined what people today call "mental toughness". He was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa R. Robinson. His older brother, Owen, preceded him in death just last year. His younger brother, Louis currently resides in Virginia. He is mourned by his partner, Sally Siegal; along with his three children, Stephen, Sharon and Christian; as well as his two grandchildren, Shyla and Jonathan. As per his wishes, Dr. Robinson donated his body to science. The family is hopeful that this contribution will help with understanding late stage cancer and work towards a cure. In life, Dr. Robinson was intensely private. Honoring his wishes, there will be no public memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society in his memory. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb

Born September 22, 1920, in Fillmore, Ventura, CA to James Harmon Walker and Ramona (Guiberson) of Bardsdale, CA. Jim attended Stanford University, graduating in 1942 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. As a newly minted Engineer he was hired by General Electric and worked on marine turbine engines. Finally, in 1945 he was assigned to a cruiser and went on to serve along the Chinese coast between Shanghai and Hong Kong. After the war he worked for GE in Pittsfield, MA before joining a division of US Steel near San Francisco in 1950. It was in a San Francisco boarding house that Jim met Fran. Katherine and Richard were born there and grew up in a suburb called Fox Chapel. Jim remained with US Steel until his retirement in 1980. During his retirement and between tennis tournaments, Jim researched family genealogy including maternal lines and after eight or so years self-published a book titled The Walker Family -Some Descendants of Samuel Walker (1615-1684) in 1990. After moving to Laguna Hills, CA (Leisure World), he expanded his genealogy research into the times, events, and people influencing our ancestors, providing context for their life stories. His collection of stories is left for his family to prepare for publication and continued research. Finally, 2014 as a part of the Warrior Words project sponsored by the North Dakota Humanities Council, Jim was given the key to the City of Grand Forks and expanded his portion into a complete book on his experiences during World War II, a treasure to his family. James leaves behind in addition to his children, seven grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren who will miss hearing him tell stories of his life and those of our ancestors. His books and written stories will have to suffice. Memorial Service 5:00 p.m. Saturday, February 11, 2017 in First Presbyterian Church, 5555 South Washington Street, Grand Forks, ND.
