POINDEXTER JAMES ADRIAN Age 65, of Monroeville, was called home to rest with the Lord surrounded by his devoted wife, loving family, and friends on January 1, 2017, at Forbes Regional Hospital. Adrian gave his life to Christ 22 years ago. His devotion to his family and firm belief in God supported him and provided peace during a brief illness. Mr. Poindexter was born on November 21, 1951, in Wilmerding to James Arthur Poindexter and Geneva Wright and resided in the Monroeville area for most of his life. After the death of his mother when he was a toddler, Adrian was raised by his maternal grandparents, Theodore and Alberta Wright, but he continued to spend as much time as possible with his father. Immediately following his graduation from Gateway High School in Monroeville, Adrian joined the United States Air Force and served a three-year tour of duty in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1972. Adrian's passion for life and adventure could always be seen through the inquisitive way he envisioned the world. He supported his curiosity with his love of NASCAR, boating, motorcycling, rollercoaster riding, and traveling, but his greatest passion was photography and this was evident as he built a very successful business, AP (Almost Perfect) Photography. Adrian had a way of capturing love and beauty through his lens. He was well known throughout the Pittsburgh region as a professional photographer who specialized in weddings, educational fundraisers, family reunions, proms, and cabarets. For almost two decades, he served as the official photographer for Hightower Scholars, Inc. and many Narcotics Anonymous regional, local, and state chapter conferences and conventions. For 20 years, Mr. Poindexter worked for the Borough of Monroeville and in January 2016, he retired and began working for Elite Coach Limousine, Inc. in Monroeville. He was a frequently requested driver because of his warm and inviting personality, and a smile that lit up the room. Adrian is survived by his loving wife and soulmate, Jamie Hightower-Poindexter; and two grandchildren that the couple parented, Taeja Booker and Jacob Mendez; grandchild, Malana Booker of Cortland, NY; one stepson, Matthew Booker of Cortland, NY; brothers, Wayne Poindexter of Monroeville, and Michael Poindexter of Pittsburgh; sister, Linda Perkins of Washington, DC; mother-in-law, Doris Hightower of Lower Burrell; sister-in-law, Diane Hightower of Lower Burrell; brother-in-law, James Hightower III of Greensboro, North Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. In addition to his parents and grandparents, Adrian was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Bobbi Booker; and his father-in-law, James Hightower, Jr. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 2017, at the ROSS G. KAPLAN DR. CARL M. AGE 87, OF ...
KAPLAN DR. CARL M. Age 87, of Boca Raton, Florida, formerly of Mt. Lebanon, died peacefully at the home of his son, Jeff, in Yakima, Washington on Monday, January 2, 2017. Dr. Carl Kaplan was a family man who cared deeply for his family, friends and patients. He was born and raised in Bronx, NY. As a teenager, Dr. Kaplan was an accomplished paddle tennis player, winning the New York City paddle tennis championship in 1945. He graduated from the City College of New York in three years, earned a Master's degree in Biochemistry from Boston University and graduated from State University of New York Medical School in 1954. Dr. Kaplan served as Chief Radiologist and Captain at the 4737th United States Air Force Hospital in St. John's, Newfoundland. After completing his residency at the University of Pennsylvania, he and his wife, Roslyn, moved to Pittsburgh. In fact, they drove into Pittsburgh for the first time on October 13, 1960, at the very time that the Pittsburgh Pirates won the World Series. Dr. Kaplan worked as a Radiologist and then exclusively as a Radiation Therapist at Mercy Hospital for 31 years. He retired as the Director of Radiation Therapy at Mercy Hospital in 1991. He always made time for his patients who loved his compassion and empathy. His patients admired his ability to sit down and talk with them. Dr. Kaplan always had time for his family. He and Roslyn were married for more than 47 years until her passing in June 2004. He was a wonderful role model and mentor for his three sons, Rich, Jeff and Jon. Rich and Jeff pursued careers as physicians, while Jon worked as a lawyer. He was also a mentor for his eight grandchildren, and he encouraged them to be happy, be the best at whatever they wanted to be, and never give up. After Dr. Kaplan retired, he worked on his golf game in Boca Raton, Florida. He repeatedly tried to improve his golf swing at the driving range. Oftentimes, he would just play the first three holes at Boca Grove Golf course. His biggest challenge was trying to drive the ball over the water at Hole #3, a Par 3 hole. When he drove the ball over the water, he felt that he had conquered the golf course and a huge smile covered his face. Dr. Kaplan had survived many illnesses which included a stroke and colon cancer. Unfortunately, neck cancer led to his passing. Despite two neck surgeries, chemotherapy, and even Radiation Therapy, he was unable to survive one of the many cancers that he treated during his medical career. Dr. Kaplan is survived by his sons, Rich (Diane) Kaplan, Jeff (Lisbeth) Kaplan and Jon (Nancy) Kaplan; eight grandchildren, Jessica, Lauren, Daniel, Rachel, Kirsten, Zoe, Ben, and Hanne; and his companion, Barbara Geenberg. A graveside service will be held in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, 509 Washington Road. Mt.
