MICHAEL POTKUL Age 58, of Perryopolis, PA, was called home to be with Jesus on August 15, 2020, after a long and courageous journey with cancer. He passed away in the comfort of his home with his wife, Karen, at his side. Born in Uniontown, PA, he was the son of Stanley and Elizabeth (Semachko) Potkul. Michael was preceded in death by his father, Stanley L. Potkul, and his nephew, Thomas Phillip Escue. Michael was a loving husband, son, brother and uncle to his family. He adored his wife and guardian angel, Karen. Michael was always there to help his family and friends in any way possible. His heart was overflowing with generosity and compassion for others. He and Karen enjoyed spending their free-time biking the many trails of PA, hiking in the mountains, walking in the park, and watching the angelic sunsets from atop the Summit at the Jumonville Cross. Michael joyfully engaged in activities with his nieces and nephews, from playing basketball, softball, football or any outdoor activity that the kids wanted to partake in, to playing board games, to going to the movies, and of course, everyone's favorite… baking delicious cookies (although the profits were being consumed as they were coming out of the oven, there was always enough to go around). Michael is survived by his beloved wife of 24 years, Karen of Perryopolis, PA; his mother, Elizabeth Potkul of Hopwood, PA; and his five brothers and four sisters, Bernard and his wife, Mary, of Uniontown, PA, Ronald and his wife, Susan, of Deland, Florida, Stanley II and his wife, Debby, of Uniontown, PA, Cindy and her husband, Tom Escue, of Hamilton, Ohio, Anthony and his wife, Donna, of Ledgewood, New Jersey, Melinda and her husband, Chris Miller, of Hopwood, PA, Lucinda and her husband, Bill Franczyk, Jr., of Washington, PA, MaryAnne and her husband, Paul Goodmen, of Kenockee, Michigan, and Steven and his girlfriend, Sarah Clites, of Hopwood, PA. He was affectionately known as Uncle Mike (UM) to eight nephews, four nieces, four great-nephews and three great-nieces. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Jumonville Christian Camp and Retreat Center to facilitate the spreading of the word of Jesus Christ, something Michael held very dear to his heart. WILLIAM STEPHEN COHEN Passed away on August 14, 2020, after a six-year heroic battle with multiple myeloma. He was born on April 15, 1949. Bill was raised in Pittsburgh, the son of Sidney and Esther Fay Cohen, and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Communications. Raised in a musical and artistic family, his passion for photography led to an early career in that field. He was a gifted painter with a compelling and personally expressive style. Bill enjoyed attending Pittsburgh Symphony concerts followed by dinners with his wife, Judy Greenwald Cohen. Bill was a proud partner and supporter of Judy's extensive involvement and leadership in both local and national Jewish organizations. The work that Judy continues to do in the non-profit community was important to them both and a great source of pride for Bill. Bill was an avid runner, having completed more than 30 marathons. He enjoyed a range of sports and outdoor activities, including cycling, racquetball, hiking and golfing. His interest in sports extended to his hometown teams. He was an enthusiastic follower of the University of Pittsburgh football and basketball teams, Pittsburgh Pirates baseball, Steelers football and Penguins hockey. He followed all the games, and the first thing he turned to each morning in the newspaper was the sports page. Bill also enjoyed the study of World War II history, his home filled with many books on this and other subjects that interested him. In his later years, he developed a special interest in watching everything from documentaries on history to science fiction and dramas. Bill was a perfectionist in the best sense of that word, and he used his talent for fixing things to attack whatever he saw that needed improvement. No job he ever started was left undone. Bill was a successful businessman and entrepreneur in multiple fields, though family and close friends were always his life's priority. Judaism and its traditions remained a guiding light throughout his life. Bill enjoyed 22 years with his love, Judy. He had a special and adoring relationship with his stepson, Joshua Kuznetsov, whom he loved since the first time they met. He was a devoted and committed parent and a partner to Judy in raising Josh. In addition to his wife, Judy, and stepson, Joshua, Bill is survived by his loving sister, Judy Cohen Wall (Irwin Wall), and niece, Rachel Lisa Joseph. Additionally, Bill is survived by brothers-in-law, Bruce Greenwald (Leslie Greenwald), Dan Greenwald; niece, Rachel Greenwald; nephew, Elliot Greenwald; and dear cousins near and far. Close friends, like his family, will miss his engaging conversation, goodness of heart, commitment to his family and artist's sense of style in all things. Special thanks to the many people, including his doctors, PAs and nurses at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center who cared for him through the years of his illness, and to the Siskind family, who were always there for him and his family. Funeral services are private. Please honor Bill and Judy's lifelong support of others. Contributions may be made to the Jewish Cemetery and Burial Association of Greater Pittsburgh (www.jcba.org) or the 21 and Able program of the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania (uwswpa.org---earmark it for the 21 and Able program). Survived by daughter, Judy of Kennedy Twp.; daughter-in-law, Cynthia; and two grandchildren. Cousins, John Andra and Carol Rittle. Step-daughter, Vicki Ruffo (Gary); step-grandaughter, Jessica Hemphill (Christopher); three great-step-grandchildren. George graduated from McKees Rocks High School. Went on to local college to study Business Management for one year. Then, went to work at his father's dealership, Park Circle Motor in Stowe Rocks Twp., which sold and repaired Studebaker cars/trucks. Upon the death of his father, the dealership closed in the 1950's. A few mechanics went on to repair all makes of cars/trucks doing State Inspection and bodywork. George re-opened Park Circle Motor and operated one of the "cleanest" shops and gained a reputation from dealerships around Pittsburgh as the expert on Problem Front End Alignments. After over 40 years doing repair work, he spent two years totally restoring a large RV motorhome. Then, after retirement, he headed off to follow his dream to see the USA with Donna, finally settling in Henderson, NV for over 19 years. He always talked about no more "snow shoveling" again. Also, since an early teenager, he played the piano every day. By his 20th birthday, he had formed a four piece Polka Band. This grew to six band members known around Pittsburgh as the "Night Kaps". They played in local and "Afterhours Clubs" plus the Party Liners on the 3-rivers. His talent expanded from the Accordion to the Organ, plus mastering three other instruments. The band had a following in the 50's and 60's for their unique presentation of Hawaiian Songs. He always asked the audience, "What song can we play for you, so I can 'tickle' the Ivories to bring music to your ears"? Family will receive friends at the McDERMOTT FUNERAL HOME, INC., 334 Forest Grove Road, Kennedy Twp., THURSDAY 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 12:00 p.m. George was a Korean War Veteran, serving with the US Army and will be interred with Military Honors at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies at 1:00 p.m. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
