BERNARD A. "ACE" CURRAN Age 93, of Duquense, on December 3, 2019. he was a son of the late Joseph and Catherine (McNally) Curran. He was a retired CORE maker from Fort Pitt Steel in Christy Park. He was a member of Christ the Light of the World Parish in Duquense, the former owner of the former Duquense Taxi Cab company in the 50s. He loved to garden and enjoyed music. He and his late wife were avid fans of Duquense High School Sports and were strong supporters of the city of Duquense, and would attend all the council meetings. He proudly served his country in the Navy during WWII. Husband of 45 years to the late Anna M. (Bogacik) Curran; father of the late Bernard Michael Curran; brother of the late Joseph Curran, Catherine, William Curran, Margaret and Ellen Ann. FRANCES MARIE SHULTZ "FRAN" Age 87, of Duquense, on December 3, 2019 at Kane Regional Medical Center, McKeesport, PA after a long battle of Alzheimer's disease. She was born in Clariton, PA to the late Robert and Bertha (Veitch) Tachoir. She was a home maker and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Duquense, PA. She enjoyed plastic canvas crafting, word search puzzles, bingo and reading Chicken Soup for the Soul books, as well as family time. She is survived by her children, Paul L. “Larry” Shultz of Duquense, Kenneth W. Shultz of Alexandria, LA, Robert D. Shultz of Duquense, Daniel A. (Linda) Shultz of Duquense, Cathy J. (William) Leonard of Holly Springs, NC and Maryanne Shultz of Orlando, FL; grandmother of William Leonard, Jr., Jonathon Shultz, John Paul Leonard, Brittny Shultz and Danielle Matta; great-grandmother of J.R. Shultz, Joey Matta, and August Olivia Leonard. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Paul “Iggy” Shultz who passed away in 2011; and brothers and sisters, Leo, Forrest, Thomas, Patrick, Jacques, Joseph, Lois White, Agnes Rushe and Catherine Odoski; and many nieces and nephews. ROBERT R. GRIES Of Peters Township, tragically died on Monday, December 2, 2019, age 84. Husband for 65 years of Patricia (Unger) Gries; loving father of Barbara Fischer (Bernie), Cindy Chapman (Gene), Kenneth (Deborah) and the late Judy Zabkar; brother of Gary (Marian) and the late Russell; grandfather of ten, and 14 great-grandchildren, plus one in heaven. Bob was a life long member of St. Joan of Arc Church. He was a former co-owner of Southwest Heating & Air Conditioning. Bob was a member of SPARKS Remote Radio Control Flying Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, boating, bowling, flying and building model airplanes and he enjoyed having morning coffee with his friends, but mostly he enjoyed spending time with his family. PEARL (VAGUSH) HANCZAR Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 3, 2019. Wife of the late John Hanczar; mother of Rebecca (Fred) Danchenko and Gordon (Cynthia) Hanczar; and the proudest Baba of Nina (Nicholas) Danchenko Ruffing and Jacob Hanczar, all of whom brought so much joy in her life. Pearl will be remembered for welcoming her friends and loved ones to her kitchen. All were welcome to talk any time over a cup of tea or a gin and tonic. Pearl was a lifelong member of the Holy Virgin Russian Orthodox Church in Carnegie, PA. She was an avid pierogi pincher, pascha breadmaker and halupchi roller. RANDY DREW MAYER Age 64, died September 13, 2019, in Northern Ireland. Randy was born in Punxsutawney, PA, on May 12, 1955, and was the son of Suzanne Mayer of West Mifflin and the late Kenneth Mayer. In addition to his dear mother, he is survived by his siblings, Rodney (Mila) Mayer of Gaithersburg, MD; Allyson (Jake) Plisco of Pleasant Hills, PA; and Bradley Mayer of Windsor, Ontario. Randy is survived by his husband, Kevin O'Connor, of Northern Ireland. Randy's family moved to West Mifflin when he was a child. After college, he travelled to Europe and was employed with the US Army in Germany, a position in which he served for 25 years, before completing his duties at West Point Military Academy in New York. Upon retiring, he returned to Europe and settled in Northern Ireland where he made his home. Randy was an active sportsman and passed away of a sudden cardiac event while on his beloved bicycle. He is truly missed by his husband, friends, and loving family. JANET BEIDOF ROTH Age 82, formerly of Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2019, in Raleigh, North Carolina after a long battle with COPD. Born in 1937 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, she attended Penn State University after graduating High School in 1955. After marrying the love of her life, Leonard Roth of Pittsburgh in 1959, the couple spent their first years of marriage on the Naval Base in Norfolk, Virginia. After moving back to Pittsburgh the couple had their two children in 1964 and 1966. Janet was an active member of the Temple Emanuel Synagogue Sisterhood. She was also a business owner of Purse String & Things and worked side by side with her twin sister Judy Friedman. Janet was also a bridal consultant and enjoyed assisting many Mt. Lebanon brides find their perfect gown. In her later years she moved to Raleigh, North Carolina to be close to her daughter and family. Janet was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Preceded in death by her parents, Rae and Murray Beidof of McKeesport, PA. She is survived by her husband, Leonard, of 60 years; son, Steven (Joy) Roth; daughter, Leslie (Brett) Huffman; and four grandchildren, Andrew and Lily Roth, Samuel and Rachel Huffman; sister, Judy (Jon) Friedman; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. MARY JEAN TRUNZO Beloved Mary Jean Trunzo passed away on November 26, 2019, at UPMC East after a brief illness. She celebrated her 99th birthday - surrounded by her loving family and friends - just last month. Born in Michigan in 1920, Mary and the Ferraro family, including her sisters, Carolina, Edith and Francis, eventually moved to Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. In 1947, she married Floyd Frank Trunzo, a senior chemical engineer with Westinghouse, and the couple moved to Monroeville to start married life together, where they raised three sons. Floyd and Mary were founding members of North American Martyrs Parish, Monroeville. Floyd, Sr. passed away in 1997 at the age of 80. Mary had a heart of gold, and lived a life of grace and kindness. She leaves behind three devoted sons, James, Floyd and Raymond; daughters-in-law, Candace and Rebecca; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and her longtime devoted companion, Robert Quinn. "Mary brought joy to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her," said a family friend. "She will be greatly missed." BERNARD H. "BERNIE" CAPLAN Age 93, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Beaver Falls, died December 4, 2019, in UPMC St. Margaret Hospital. Born March 9, 1926, in Rochester, he was the son of the late Phillip and Cerna Levin Caplan. He was a graduate of Rochester High School and the University of Pittsburgh. He was a member of Temple Rodef Shalom, and a past president of Beaver Valley United Jewish Community Center. He had been the owner of the Fashion Center in Rochester, a partner in Blinn and Company, and founder and owner of Caplan Scrap Metal in Wampum. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Rose Blinn Caplan; a grandson, Aaron Caplan; a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Melvin Weinberg, and a sister-in-law, Fernie Caplan. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn Sable Caplan; four sons and daughters-in-law, Howard and Lorrie Caplan, York, PA, Michael and Cheryl Caplan, Harrisburg, PA, Phillip Caplan and Zoe Schneider, Denver, CO, Jonathan and Marie Caplan, Atlanta, Georgia; seven grandchildren, Benjamin, Alex, Hannah, Ari, Liam, Amanda, Lauren; two brothers, Reuben Caplan, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Mashel Caplan, Pittsburgh, and many loving nieces and nephews. His family and friends will always remember him as a true gentleman and the kindest person they ever knew. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. She died at home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 20, 2019. She found great satisfaction through her work in civil service in Federal Government agencies. Charlotte valued her intelligence and her independence. A lifelong Episcopalian, she arrived at Calvary Episcopal Church in 1987. She was an active member, committed to the church and sustained by her faith. CHARLES EDWARD LAWTON, JR. Age 90, on Monday, December 2, 2019, of Upper St. Clair (formerly of Whitehall). Chuck (“Charlie”) was born June 2, 1929 in Pittsburgh, the son of Charles Edward and Marie Edith (Connolly) Lawton. He was a World War II veteran with the U.S. Army, serving in Korea. Beloved husband of the late Violet Rose (Secen) Lawton; beloved father of Mary Ann (Tod) Pike, Joann (William) Bryan, and Charles P. (Heather) Lawton; devoted grandfather of Megan and Sharon Pike, Bernadette, Stephanie, and Andrea Bryan, and Adam Lawton; brother of James Lawton (deceased), Helen Bassett, Janet Cole, Robert Lawton, and Ruth McMurdo. Chuck was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also a railroad enthusiast having worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad for seven years. He was voted “most silent” in his high school yearbook but was known for his quick wit and his ready smile. DOLORES (MIKULSKI) BITTNER Age 96, formerly of Glenshaw, passed away on Monday, October 28, 2019, surrounded by family. She was a graduate of Shaler High School and Duff's Business Institute. Dolores, affectionately known by her 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren as Granny B, had many talents including an accomplished seamstress, genealogist, and bridge player. She is survived by her five children, Ken (Terri), Barb (William), Neal (Kim), Eileen (Barry), and Chris. Dolores retired as an executive secretary at H.J. Heinz, but ask any of her grandchildren, and they will tell you that she “stirred the soup.” The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 9:30 AM at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish, 2510 Middle Road, Glenshaw. KATHRYN "KATHY" POLING SPROUSE Age 83, of Sewickley, Pennsylvania, (formerly of Davidsonville, MD) passed away on December 2, 2019. Born March 10, 1936, in Grantsville, West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Corel O. and Tessa Tennant Poling. Kathy graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1952 at the age of 16. She attended West Virginia University and graduated in 1956 where she received her Bachelor of Music in public school music, with piano as her primary instrument. While Kathy was a student at West Virginia University she was President of Delta Delta Delta and represented the School of Music in the student legislature. She was a member of Mu Phi Epsilon music honorary and represented the WVU chapter of Kappa Delta Pi education honorary at the national convention at Oklahoma State University. After graduation she moved to Maryland where she began a long teaching career and met her husband, Richard L. Sprouse, who preceded her in death. She acquired her Master of Education in music from the University of Maryland and taught 30 years as an elementary vocal music teacher in Prince George's County, Maryland. In 1984 she was selected as one of ten outstanding teachers in the county. During her career she trained vocal music student teachers from the University of Maryland and Bowie State University. After retiring she worked for a mechanical contracting company and also enjoyed using her piano skills accompanying soloist and choral groups, playing for church, and providing background music for receptions. She sang for 25 years with The Chesapeake Chorale, an auditioned group in the Annapolis MD area. Kathy moved to Sewickley in 2011 to be close to her family and became active in the Sewickley Presbyterian Church choir, as well as other cultural activities in the area. She is also an ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church, a member of DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), life member of WVU Alumni Association and Life Member and past president of the WVU Music Alumni Association. In 2012 Kathy established a music scholarship for deserving piano students at West Virginia University. She is survived by her sister, Edith Poling Yeager; niece, Susan Humeston Coyle; grandniece, Ave Tessa-Estelle Coyle; grandnephew, Joseph Andrew Coyle III, all of Sewickley. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her niece, Jennifer Humeston Anderson. A private memorial will be held in Davidsonville, Maryland at a later date. WILLIAM ARNOT HOUSTON William Houston, of Fox Chapel, PA, died peacefully on December 4, 2019, surrounded by family. A proud Pittsburgher, he was born on August 17, 1938 and raised in the Point Breeze section of Pittsburgh, attended Sterrett Street School and Shady Side Academy before attending Haverford College and Duquesne University Law School. Bill loved the law and being an integral member of the Allegheny County Bar Association. He started his business career in Pittsburgh with Rust Engineering, and then in corporate law with Litton Industries in Connecticut and Wisconsin, and later moved back to Pittsburgh to join his brother, John and father, James in private practice at the firm founded by his father. Relationships with colleagues in the Bar Association were close. Bill took great joy in lunches at the Grant Street Tavern with fellow lawyers and judges. Bill lived in Fox Chapel and was a member at Fox Chapel Golf Club for the last 48 years. He and his wife Jean were an active couple in social events with Bill always the life of the party. Gifted with a tremendous voice, Bill was a longtime member of the Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church choir, a Barbershop Quartet and showcased in the chorus of the Civic Light Opera production of “The Student Prince” in 1977. Golf with friends and family was very important to him. Saturdays and special annual weekend events were devoted to his love of the game and the many friends with whom he enjoyed playing. His nickname of “The Bagger” was well earned, as the many appearances of his name on the various trophies at Fox Chapel Golf Club will attest. Bill was a lifelong learner, evident in his deep love for reading on a host of topics and literary genres. His mother told the story that the Sterret Street School librarian called one day to remark that “Bill has read all the books in the library,” a fact confirmed at Bill's 80th birthday party by his classmate and dear friend, Bill Meyer. He is survived by his wife, Jean Houston; brother, John Houston, II of Pittsburgh; sisters, Jeannie of Tampa, FL, and Roberta of Pittsburgh; sons, James of Granby, CO and William of Jupiter, FL; as well as two grandsons, Thaddeus and Nathaniel Houston in California. He was the devoted son of Kathleen and the late Dennis Christian: cherished brother of Tim (Nidia), Cory, and Kelly (Daniel) Szekely; proud uncle of Cory, Jessica, Daniel, Christian, Patrick, Fabiola, John, and Courtney. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and his work family at Allegheny Service. Denny never let his physical ailments stand in his way and lived with great dignity and loved his life. Rest in Peace. Friends will be received on Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the BOCK FUNERAL HOME, LTD., 1500 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw. Veze, Sr.; daughter of the late Stanley, Sr. and Mary (Havrilla) Wasik; mother of Kenneth R. Veze, Carrie Veze, and Dawn Veze; grandmother of Emily, Alexandra, Madalyn, and Taylor; sister of Stanley (Connie) Wasik, Jr. and the late Robert Wasik; also survived by her beloved Yorkie, Toby.
