DANIEL BYRON HOLOWATY Formerly of Carnegie, passed away on August 28, 2019. Born November 21, 1920, Dan belonged to The Greatest Generation, having served in the United States Army in Europe during WWII. Dan was preceded in death by his wife Anthonia Holowaty, parents John and Anna Holowaty, sister Anna Holowaty, and brother Michael Holowaty. He is survived by his son Thomas Holowaty and wife Susan of Ligonier, three grandchildren and their spouses Jill (Jason) Wallin, Melanie (Jason) Schmidt, and Timothy (Stephanie) Holowaty. He was blessed with six great-grandchildren who he appreciated visiting with immensely and with whom he shared a kindred curious and mischievous spirit. Dan enjoyed an active life well into his nineties golfing and socializing at the local senior center. He was known to love dancing; when his grandchildren were young, he would tell them, I'll dance at your wedding, and he did! Family and friends will be received at VLADIMIR S. JOHN BIEDRZYCKI Of Robinson Township, peacefully on Thursday, August 29, 2019 surrounded by family, after a brief battle with heart disease. Preceded in death by his father, John A. Biedrzycki; mother, Amelia "Millie" Biedrzycki-Cercone; and brother, David B. Cercone, Esq. Survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Bette Jean (Kinneman) Biedrzycki; son, John A. Biedrzycki, Esq. (Beth); sister, Michele Cercone; brother, Paul Biedrzycki; beloved grandchildren, Max and Molly. John began his career in the U.S. Army, serving from 1967-1970 in Korea as a Pay Distribution Specialist with the 7th Infantry Division. Thereafter, working as a laborer by day and going to night school, he earned his Masters in Education from the University of Pittsburgh and began working for the Pittsburgh Public Schools. John taught Social Studies, American Democracy and was the director the teaching academy at Langley High School. He was the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship in 1989, which led to three months of study in Sierra Leone and The Gambia to develop an African Studies curriculum for his students. In addition to teaching, John was the assistant baseball coach for Langley's 1982 State Championship and head coach for back to back City Championships in 1997 and 1998. Since 1969, John had been an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), holding various local and state leadership positions as an advocate for veterans, their families and active duty military. Upon his retirement from teaching in 2005, John devoted all of his free time to the VFW, While his accomplishments within the VFW were numerous, most notably he served as the Commander of the Department of Pennsylvania from 2002-2003 and achieved All American status. Thereafter he served on numerous national VFW committees advocating to the legislature and Veterans Administration to improve conditions for active duty service members and their families, as well as those in the VA health system, John was unanimously elected National Commander in Chief at the 2015 VFW convention held in Pittsburgh. Following his election, John traveled all over the United States and to numerous foreign countries to observe the working conditions and treatment of our active duty and wounded soldiers, During his travels in Asia, he visited remote sites where the missing remains of our fallen were being sought out and recovered. Armed with firsthand knowledge of what he observed, John zealously advocated on behalf of active duty soldiers, veterans and those missing in action, through testimony before Congress and Oval Office meetings with President Obama. Following the expiration of his term of office as Commander in Chief, John continued to travel the country in support of veterans causes until he was physically unable to travel. CHARLOTTE "COOKIE" RAUSCHER Of Bethel Park, at home on Friday, August 30, 2019, age 76. The story of Cookie starts on March 20, 1942, to the late Michael and Charlotte Chockla of Clairton. She has an older sister, Patricia Hassenplug (Gordon) and a younger brother, Michael Chockla (Janice). After high school, she met her soul mate, Francis Rauscher. Married for 57 years, their love never waned. Holding hands and kissing like teenagers to the end. They have one daughter, Kristen Stubenraugh. Kristen and her husband, Richard have two children, Michael Zeiler, Jr. and Jacquelyn Stubenraugh. Cookie devoted her life to God. She worked for years at St. Paul's Retreat Center. She even made a journey to the holy lands. Cookie appreciated art and was a wonderful painter. Her legacy is the love she gave to those she met and the willingness to also help those in need. She will be missed by her sister-in-law, Ann Mercurio and her many nieces and nephews. She left this world surrounded by her family. HELEN C. BALOURIS Age 92, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on August 31, 2019. She was born in Braddock, PA on July 3, 1927, to Christ and Maria Stambolis. Helen is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Anthony Balouris. She is also survived by her children, Dr. Christ (Kathy) Balouris, Paula (Gerri) Valliant, Presvytera Maria (Fr. Philemon) Patitsas, Dr. Constantine (Diane) Balouris, Dr. Sondra Balouris (Dr. Clifford Brubaker) and Athena (Munish) Grover, as well as nephew, Christos Georgiou from Greece who lived with the family for many years. Helen is also survived by her 15 grandchildren, Marielena, Antonios, Yanni, Eleni, Maria, Alexandra, Anna, Nicholas, Eleni, Markella, Anthony, Elaina, Demetrios, Nicholas and Chrysanthi; three great-grandchildren, Georgiana, Maria, and Nikolas, and a large extended family of nieces and nephews, both here and in Greece. She also is survived by her sister, Theodora Stambolis. A lifelong Pittsburgh Pirates fan, Helen was known for her engaging personality, elegant style, and unwavering love and devotion to her family. She helped husband Anthony with the family business, The Bellevue Restaurant, for 38 years. An active member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Helen was involved with many of the philanthropic, social, and community activities of the parish. In her later years, she worked at Balouris Eye Center, where her pleasant voice and cheerful disposition touched patients and staff. Helen was preceded in death by daughter, Alexandra; brothers, Angelo and Gus Stambolis; and sisters, Sophia Libbos and Alice Tzanetakos. Special thanks to caregivers, Katina and Robin. She was happiest when swimming at the pool, playing soccer, and surrounded by her American Girl Dolls. Annie was known by her family to be vibrant, loving, and was kind to everyone she encountered. EDITH (STRICKLER) SUWAK Age 81, of McMurray, formerly of Washington, passed after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was born, July 26, 1938, in Pittsburgh to Ralph and Beatrice Devor Strickler. Edith graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School in 1956 and attended Grove City College and Robert Morris College. Upon graduating she worked for the United Steel Workers union, in Pittsburgh. After raising her children, she joined H&R Block and remained a loyal employee for 25 years. While living in Washington, she was actively involved with the W&J Women's Auxiliary, Daughter of Current Events, the First Presbyterian and the YWCA. She enjoyed playing Bridge with friends, gardening and was an avid tennis player for teams based in Washington and South Park. Later in life she took up golf active in the St. Clair Country Club, Women's Nine Holer organization and their Paddle Tennis team. Edith was a seasoned traveler, having been to Europe, Africa, and Egypt with her husband, family and friends. She recently completed her last bucket list trip by visiting China. On November 26, 1960, in the Southminster Presbyterian Church in Mt. Lebanon, she married Robert Bob Suwak, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Kelley J. Suwak, of North Strabane; a son, John D. (Tamara) Suwak, of McMurray; and a sister, Janice Strickler, of Pittsburgh. Deceased is a son, Robert RJ Suwak; and a sister, Katherine (Tay) Mcferran. JEAN M. (SANDROVICH) MADIA Age 65, of Pine Township on Thursday, August 29, 2019, left this world for a better place in the arms of her Savior. She was the beloved wife of Frank J. Madia for 45 years. Jean was the dear and loving mother of Sarah and Luke Madia and a model mother-in-law to Amy Madia. Becoming a grandma to Lana, Max and Leia was a highlight of her life. Caring sister of Stephen (Diane) Sandrovich and Rosemary (Lee) Marshall and loving aunt to Molly Wetmore, Barry McLaughlin, Scott and Nick Marshall. Jean was the dear sister-in-law to Rosemary (Bill) McLaughlin and Jim Madia. Jean worked behind the scenes to help keep Madia Homes, Inc., humming along since its beginning. Jean was a generous, kind and faith filled person who was bighearted and a special friend to many. Her quiet reserved personality belied her quirky sense of humor. WILLIAM ALBERT KIRK Age 72, of Franklin Park, beloved husband to Ruth Kirk. Also survived by his son, Ryan (Anna Littlefield) Kirk of Wilmington, Delaware and grand-pup, Atlas. Predeceased by his mother and father, Helen Stickel Kirk of New Castle, PA, and F. Albert Kirk of Belfast, Ireland. William was a draftsman with Richardson, Gordon and Associates and later, a financial planner at Ameriprise. William was an active member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wexford, where he served on the church council and call committee, and was chairman of the property committee. He was a trustee for the McKinley Stuckrath Lodge No. 318, Free & Accepted Masons, and volunteered as a Cub Scout leader with Pack 171 of Ingomar, PA. An avid vintage sports car enthusiast, William was a member of the Greater Pittsburgh MG Club, and a long-time patron of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, where in recent years he volunteered with the patron parking committee. Friends received Tuesday 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at SIMONS FUNERAL HOME, INC., 7720 Perry Highway. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2500 Brandt School Road, Wexford. MARY E. (BARTOS) PALAMONE Age 91, of Monroeville, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2019. Beloved wife of the late Louis Palamone; loving mother of Christine M. Palamone and Janet L. Palamone; sister of Agnes Pelcher, and the late Helen LaGorga, Albert and John Bartos; also survived by many nieces and nephews. Mary graduated from Etna High School and had worked at Abbott Laboratories as a secretary for several years. She was an active member of the Catholic Church and a longtime member of the Catholic Daughters of America: Court St Rene (Senior and Junior), and volunteered at North American Martyrs School as a librarian assistant and had participated in many other volunteer activities. Mary loved handmade crafts and was always learning new skills at the Homemakers Association. She took this love for creative handcrafts and displayed her works at many craft shows in the local Pittsburgh areas. Mary and her late husband Lou were excellent dancers. They would enjoy Ballroom at dance halls and Polka parties throughout the year. Friends will be received on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the GENE H. CORL INC.
