ZIMMERMAN GARY B. Of Shadyside, age 75, believing fully he was still a kid. He died peacefully and strong on Wednesday, October 28, 2015, with his wife, daughters, family, soccer teammates, and good friends with him in person or in spirit. Born in Sykesville, Pennsylvania, he was preceded in death by his mother, Vaughn; father, Blaine; and sister, Karen Felczak. Gary was the much beloved and loving husband of Jane Campbell Moriarty; adored and adoring father of Lisa (Jeff Krackow), Amy (Eric Haldane) and Kat (Corey Hartman); and the amazing Pop-Pop of Lela and Aaron (Krackow) and Gibson (Zimmerman). He also leaves his sister, Deb Zediak (Brad); several cousins, nephews, nieces; and his lifelong friend, Dan Rowan. Gary received an Honorable Discharge as a Sergeant in the United States Army, was a graduate of Slippery Rock College and Duquesne University School of Law, and was a long-standing member of the Pennsylvania Bar. Admitted to practice in numerous federal and state courts around the country, he served as Deputy Director of the Allegheny County Public Defenders Office early in his career, and was a private criminal defense lawyer for decades. Gary was routinely listed in Best Lawyers in America and Pennsylvania Super Lawyers. A true lion of the bar, he was passionate about justice for his clients and was a resolute and fearless advocate in the courtroom. Although devoted to his family and his work, Gary was also a serious athlete his entire life. He was a very proud member of the Azzurri Soccer Team until his death, playing under his team-name "Guarino." Gary competed on the soccer, football and baseball teams while at Slippery Rock and played football in the Army. He began competitive running and downhill skiing at the age of 50 and even had a tryout with the Philadelphia Phillies after college. Gary was a stylish man with a terrific sense of humor and more than nearly anyone, loved having a good time. He truly lived. Final arrangements for Gary are private but there will be a Memorial Service in late November. The family requests that memorial donations be made to either the University of Pittsburgh (write “Simmons Center for Interstitial Lung Disease” on the check) or to Duquesne University School of Law Call to Excellence Fund, where a program is being created to assist in training current and future public defenders. Arrangements by McCABE BROS., INC. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
